SEMESTER 1: Fall semester

Marketing Management

This course involves the study of key marketing concepts and how they affect decision-making in agribusiness firms, with emphasis on the formulation of strategic marketing plans. The course is taught by using a case study method approach.

Financial and Strategic Analysis

This course teaches students how to use financial accounting and business policy concepts to analyses the impact of financial issues on agribusiness firms today.

Financial Management

This course examines the implications of financing decisions made by firms in a world of uncertainty. Topics such as capital budgeting, capital structure, dividend policy, market efficiency and capital asset pricing will be analyzed from the perspective of corporate finance and portfolio management theory.

Business Decision Making

The objective of this course is to provide MBA students with an understanding and working knowledge of analytical techniques in statistics and mathematical programming used to commonly solve management problems. The emphasis is on the application and interpretation of the quantitative methods rather than on the theoretical background.

Information Management

This 6 week course examines the role, issues, components and management of information systems within an organization. Students will be exposed to various database and web design software and be given the opportunity to develop their own Web site and database.

Organizational Behaviour

Core concepts regarding organizational theory and their inter-relationships as well as concepts such as group decision making, and intra-group and inter-group dynamics are explored.

Industry Speaker Seminar

Part I of a 2-semester course. This is a seminar course in which various members of the agribusiness community are brought in to discuss issues that are going on today in the industry. The course is designed to give students a chance to network with industry.

SEMESTER 2: Winter semester

Futures and Options

This course examines the theory and application of Futures, Options and other financial derivative securities for marketing, risk management and investment purposes. Emphasis is placed on the application of these instruments to real business situations, and on the development and implementation of trading strategies designed to meet the precise needs of specific business clients.

Managerial Economics

This course introduces students to the latest developments in the economic analysis of the inside workings and organization of firms. The course attempts to explain the diversity of economic organizations, and more generally why economic activity is sometimes carried out through firms and sometimes through markets.

Agricultural Policy

This course is designed to critically analyse the contemporary issues of critical importance to the agrifood sector. Issues involving biotechnology, farm tax policy, government support programs and foreign trade policies will be examined.

Managerial Skills Development

Experiential approaches are used to enhance managerial skills. Knowledge and understanding of the theory and research underlying skills’ behavioral guidelines are emphasized.

Business Law

This 6 week course gives students exposure to various aspects of the law and how it affects a business. Topics to be discussed include labour law, small company start-up regulations, contract law, corporate law and environmental law.

Agribusiness Elective

Students may choose from a selection of Agribusiness electives.  Choice of selection is subject to approval by the MBA coordinator.

SEMESTER 3: Spring semester

Business Policy

This course involves the examination of the principles of business management. Emphasis is placed on the formation of business strategy, policies and alliances. Selected case studies are used to explore policy and implementation, and how decisions about those aspects of business affect a firm’s competitiveness.

Operations Management

This course offers an overview of the management issues surrounding the planning, operating and controlling the systems used in operations with emphasis on farm and agribusiness applications. This course also examines issues surrounding supply chain management with emphasis in the agrifood sector.

Agribusiness Elective

Students may choose from a selection of Agribusiness electives.  Choice of selection is subject to approval by the MBA coordinator. 

Major Project

Students prepare a comprehensive proposal for their major project.  The student will then carry out an approved project leading to a professional publication (report). This report requires the student to integrate his/her technical, management and communication skills to produce an individually authored document.  This paper is completed under the supervision of a two member MBA advisory committee.  The committee members are selected by the student.  The major project also requires a public defense, open to all members of the University community and interested industry people.

SEMESTER 4 (optional): Fall semester

Extended Major Project

Students will complete an academic project as part of spending a full semester working in the agribusiness industry.  Contact MBA Coordinator for more details.

Industry Practicum

As part of the "extended major project" students would gain practical experience while working in an MBA type position within an Agribusiness company.  Contact MBA Chair for more details.
