What to see Currently at The Arboretum

It's baby time in The Arboretum.  Young groundhogs, squirrels and chipmunks are being seen in various locations.  Young birds are now leaving their nests and noisy parents are protesting if anything gets too close to their "teenage stage" youth.  The warm weather has also brought with it many new insects.  Dragonflies and damselflies are now commonly seen over the fields and brilliant green tiger beetles escort you along the stonedust pathways.  There are many pollinating bees, wasps, flies, beetles and moths on the blooming dogwood, lilac and nannyberry shrubs.  And now there are butterflies everywhere!  Try the butterfly quiz and get to know some of our butterflies before your next visit.  Click here to find out more about our upcoming Dragonfly and Damselfly Workshop and Butterfly Workshop.

There is lots to see in bloom at The Arboretum in June. May was a great time to catch the formal lilac cultivars in all of their glory, however, this month offers the chance to see the flowers of many of the wild lilac species, such as Hungarian lilac (Syringa josikaea), nodding lilac (Syringa komarowii) and late lilac (Syringa villosa).  The end of the month is great time to witness Peking lilac (Syringa pekinensis) and Japanese tree-lilac (Syringa reticulata) as their flowers begin to open up.

A tour of the World of Trees is always a rewarding experience too with many rare plants including Yellowhorn (Xanthoceras sorbifolium), Jetbead (Rhodotypos scandens), Tulip Tree (Liriodendon tulipifera) and Summersweet (Calycanthus floridus) displaying their best during the month of June.
