Arboretum

The Arboretum is hosting an interpretive program in the Gosling Wildlife Gardens Sundays throughout the summer. Tours begin at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the J.C. Taylor Centre, and an interpretive naturalist will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Upcoming themes are “Evolution of the Modern Garden” June 24, “Ten Gross Things in Your Garden” July 1, “The Good, the Bad and the Vascular” July 8 and “Who's Been in Your Garden?” July 15.

Naturalist Chris Earley leads workshops on dragonflies and damselflies July 11 and hawks Sept. 7. Both run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and cost $50. Registration and payment are due June 27 and Aug. 24, respectively. Call Ext. 52358.

Seminars

OVC hosts a talk by Mick Bhatia, director and senior scientist at the McMaster Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute and a Canada Research Chair in McMaster's Faculty of Health Sciences, June 28 at noon in OVC 1713. His topic is “Characterization and Future Applications of Human Embryonic Stem Cells.”

Leonard Barolli of the Fukuoka Institute of Technology in Japan is guest speaker in the Department of Computing and Information Science seminar series June 28. On July 11, post-doctoral researcher Carlos Sopuerta of the Department of Physics discusses “The Role of Scientific Computation in Relativistic Astrophysics.” The seminars begin at 3:30 p.m. in Reynolds 219.

Teaching Support

TSS hosts the day-long symposium “Web-Enhanced Learning With Blackboard” July 18, focusing on the innovative ways that Blackboard technology (formerly WebCT) has been used in teaching across campus. The day will feature topic- focused working groups, presentations and a guest panel showcasing unique uses of tools and techniques.

The ongoing “Teaching on the Edge” discussion group continues throughout the summer, with sessions scheduled for June 25, July 9 and 23 and Aug. 20.

TSS will offer training this summer for instructors who are preparing courses for fall using Blackboard technology. For those who prefer a methodical approach to training or who are new to Blackboard, a guided workshop is being offered July 4 and Aug. 16 and 30. For instructors already comfortable with the technology, a self-guided workshop runs June 21, Aug. 14 and Sept. 5.

TSS will offer Blackboard drop-in clinics twice a week over the summer. Instructors can stop by the TSS Learning Technology Lab in McLaughlin 200-A for help with course development Wednesdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Thesis Defences

The final examination of PhD candidate Graham Holloway, Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, is July 6 at 10 a.m. in Animal Science/Nutrition 141. The thesis is "The Role of Protein Mediated Transport in Regulating Mitochondrial Long Chain Fatty Acid Oxidation." The adviser is Prof. Lawrence Spriet.

The final examination of Lesley Edwards, an M.Sc. candidate in the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition, is July 16 at 10 a.m. in MACS 331. The thesis is "Abdominal Obesity in Persons With Versus Without Chronic Spinal Cord Injury." The adviser is Prof. Andrea Buchholz.

The final examination of M.Sc. candidate Alida Finnie, Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition, is July 27 at 1 p.m. in MACS 331. The thesis is "Estimating Coronary Heart Disease Risk in Community-Dwelling Persons With Chronic Spinal Cord Injuries." The adviser is Prof. Andrea Buchholz.

The final examination of Carly Cook, an M.Sc. candidate in the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition, is Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. in MACS 331. The thesis is "Meaning and Experience of 'Eating Out' in the Dementia Context." The adviser is Prof. Heather Keller.

The final examination of PhD candidate Natasha Frick, Department of Integrative Biology, is Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. in the science complex 3317. The thesis is "The Metabolism of Aestivation in the African Lungfish, Protopterus dolloi." The adviser is Prof. Jim Ballantyne.

The final examination of M.Sc. candidate Julia Nowak, Department of Integrative Biology, is Aug. 29 at 9:30 a.m. in Science Complex 3317. The thesis is "Comparative Study of the Mode of Leaflet Separation in Chamaedorea spp. (Arecaceae)." The adviser is Prof. Usher Posluszny.

The final examination of Kirit Patel, a PhD candidate in the Department of Rural Studies, is Sept. 13 at 1:30 p.m. in Landscape Architecture 143. The thesis is "Cultivating Diversity on Farm: Examining DeFacto Conservation of Agrobiodiversity in a Tribal Region of Western India." The adviser is Prof. Sally Humphries.

Community Events

McCrae House will host a Canada Day celebration July 1 from noon to 4 p.m. Starting July 4 and running Wednesdays all summer, the museum will offer afternoon teas from 2 to 4 p.m. Reservations are required at 519-836-1221.
