Faculty & Staff

The Bachelor of Arts & Sciences program is freestanding from college and department structures: it crosses many academic disciplines, courses, and student interests, and its own unique “ASCI” (Arts & SCIence) core curriculum. As such, the program’s ASCI core is also staffed outside the usual college and department structures, with faculty with cross-disciplinary expertise coming forward to teach ASCI courses from colleges across campus.

We are also building a faculty complement whose terms of appointment to the university are explicitly and jointly designated to the BAS core and a college/departmental home. Dr. Sofie Lachapelle and Dr. Maya Goldenberg are the first 2 such appointments for the program. Thanks to the leadership of Deans Murray, Bruce, and Joseph, the campus-wide support of the BAS, the growing popularity and success of the program, we look forward to more joint faculty appointments in other colleges across campus.

Attracted to Guelph because of our award-winning faculty, campus resources and active community, BAS students value the opportunity to connect with faculty who actively practice interdisciplinarity in academia. They seek mentorship opportunities at every turn and value those instructors who are committed to the sometimes difficult task of working within a subset of more traditional disciplines.

BAS Employment Opportunities

Dr. Sofie Lachapelle, Dr. Maya Goldenberg and Dr. Pat Barclay are the first three cross appointments for the Bachelor of Arts & Sciences program. Dr. Jacqueline Murray, former dean of the College of Arts (COA) led the way with Sofie’s cross appointment with the History Department; current COA dean Don Bruce followed with Maya's cross appointment with the Philosophy Department; followed by the current CSAHS dean, Alun Joseph, cross appointing Pat with the Psychology Department.

Thanks to the leadership of Deans Murray, Bruce, and Joseph, the campus-wide support of the BAS, the growing popularity and success of the program, we look forward to more joint faculty appointments in other colleges.
