GRADUATE STUDENT ASSISTANTSHIP (PhD): Ecosystem Function and Pollination across a Major Ecotone: Boreal Forest, Tree-line & Tundra

Supervision: Dr. Peter Kevan, School of Environmental Sciences, University of Guelph

Location:  University of Guelph with field work in Wapusk, MB

Project:  Pollination is a crucial ecosystem service that is now recognized as in jeopardy in many places world-wide. In northern Canada, an area undergoing rapid ecological change, pollination studies have been few and little attention in particular has been paid to comparative differences across ecotones. This project will examine ecosystem function and pollination across the interface between the boreal forest and Arctic tundra in the complex mosaics of habitats across the tree line.  The successful candidate will conduct field work along North-South transect from Churchill to Gillam, and both North-South and East-West in Wapusk National Park, and use an ecosystemic approach to document ecological connectance webs, address the importance of biodiversity, and consider the relative importance of the drivers of ecosystem function and structure. The project falls under the auspices of NSERC Canadian Pollination, providing a unique opportunity to collaborate with a large, national team of scientists on a range of issues surrounding pollinators and pollination in Canada.

Qualifications: B.Sc. Hon. degree (or equivalent) in biology, ecology or related discipline, and a first class GPA (80%, A- or 3.7) in the last two years of study, or an MSc in a related field. Experience and knowledge in entomology and/or taxonomy are preferred.

Stipend:  Non-scholar PhD students will be guaranteed a minimum stipend of $17,500 per year for 3 years.  Canadian applicants will receive an additional $6,000 in funding through departmental graduate support programs.

Start Date: January or May 2012 (flexible)

Interested candidates should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae and a copy of transcripts to:
