Email Alias

Gryph Mail Extensions

What is an email alias?

A email alias is a forwarding address: mail addressed to your email alias will be delivered to your account. It does not replace the address that has already been assigned to you based on your central login ID.

Why would I want an alias?

Aliases are not restricted to 8 characters, so they can be more memorable and descriptive than your central login ID. Aliases are of the form <first.last@uoguelph.ca>. If your preferred alias is already assigned, you may add initials, or alternate forms of your name (i.e. Bob instead of Robert) to make your alias unique.

Who can have an alias?

All staff and faculty with Gryph mail accounts may add an email alias.

How do I add an alias?

Staff and faculty may add an alias directly from within Gryph mail. Log in to Gryph mail and click on the Add an Alias zimlet to add an alias.

Please note that the Alias Manager zimlet is only available from within the Advanced version of Gryph mail (not the Standard or Mobile versions.) If you are unable to access the Advanced version of Gryph mail, please contact the CCS Help Centre to request a new alias.

Can I log in using my alias?

An email alias is not a central login ID. Your email alias cannot be used to log in to other services that request a central login ID and password.

Can I have more than one alias?

Only one @uoguelph.ca alias is allowed per account. You may have other aliases in other domains (such as @exec.uoguelph.ca, or @ovc.uoguelph.ca) in addition to your @uoguelph.ca alias.

Can I send mail from my alias?

You may send mail from your alias. To change your From address, log in to Gryph mail, select the Preferences tab, and select Accounts. Select the name and address to appear in the From field of your email messages. Please note: if you have just added or modified an alias, you must log out and log back in to Gryph mail before changing your From address.

If you are a Listserv list owner, moderator, or subscriber you may prefer to change your Reply To address instead of your From address. If you change your From address, Listserv will not recognize you as the owner, moderator, or member of the list.

Can students have an email alias?

At present, only staff and faculty are eligible for an email alias.

Where do I get help?

If you have a problem with your email alias, or have a question not answered above, please contact the CCS Help Centre.
