Blackberry Smartphones

There are two ways you can access your Gryph Mail from your BlackBerry through BIS or BES.

BIS

The BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) comes with your BlackBerry data plan by default. With BIS you will be able to get your GryphMail but not your Gryph Calendar or the global addressbook list (GAL). You may synchronize your Gryph Calendar by purchasing compatible synchronization software such as AstraSync, however CCS is unable to provide support for this, however, you may be able to get support directly from the vendor.

Please also review Blackberry FAQ which answers the most frequently asked questions about Blackberry devices and the CCS support information for Blackberries on BIS.

BES

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) package requires dedicated hardware and software which U of G has purchased so staff can synchronize corporate email, calendar, contacts and tasks. Since there is additional hardware and software involved, the cost for the data plan is higher than BIS or ActiveSync devices.

Getting Started with BES

CCS launched a BES service in August 2009 which is open to faculty and staff.  If you are interested in using the BES service, please have your IT Admin send a request to the CCS Help Centre with the following:

  1. If you do not have an IT Admin, please indicate this in your reply
  2. Please indicate if you have signed up for the BES plan with your service provider. You need this plan before you can be activated on the BES server.
  3. Please provide your: first and last name, central login id and department.
  4. We strongly recommend to read the BES Best Practices before you begin to avoid missed meetings.
  5. Please also review Blackberry FAQ which answers the most frequently asked questions about Blackberry devices.
  6. Once you have been given a password, please read the instructions to activate your device.
