Off Campus
If you have or plan to get a connection to the internet through a third party Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as Bell Sympatico or Rogers@Home, you should still be able to access most of U of G's systems and services. However, there are some restrictions which you should be aware of.
Email Restrictions
When you connect through another ISP, you cannot use the university's outgoing mail server, (outbound.mail.uoguelph.ca), to send your mail. This restriction prevents abuse of our mail system by people who are not members of the U of G community.
You will need to configure your email software to use the outgoing (SMTP) mail server of your ISP, your ISP can tell you its SMTP mail server name. Some ISPs may have restrictions in place to prevent you from using their outgoing mail server to send mail from a University of Guelph email address. You should ask your ISP if you can send mail via their SMTP server from your U of G email address.
You can also use Gryph Mail, which lets you work with your U of G email from your web browser. No configuration is required, and this service will work regardless of who supplies your connection to the internet.
Telnet Restrictions
You will not be able to telnet directly to www.uoguelph.ca. however, you can telnet to general.uoguelph.ca. To do so, switch to the command prompt screen on your computer's operating system and type telnet general.uoguelph.ca. More information is available in the Shell Access section.
Restricted Access to University Resources from the Internet
Some University resources, such as the Library's electronic journals and databases, are restricted to campus access only. If you require access to these restricted resources from your home, you can use the VPN service.
