Using VPN

WebVPN

WebVPN can be connected by WebLaunch or standalone mode.

WebLaunch Connecting

  1. Open your Internet browser and enter the VPN server address: http://vpn.uoguelph.ca
  2. You will now be presented with the WebVPN authentication page. Enter your Central Login ID and Password and click Login.
  3. Upon successful authentication, the VPN server checks to see that you have the latest version of the AnyConnect WebVPN client installed on your computer. Installing the latest client takes approximately 1 to 2 minutes depending on your computer's processing capabilities. The VPN server uses ActiveX on Internet Explorer or Java 1.4 or later on Netscape, Mozilla, or Firefox to push the image to your computer and install it.
  4. When the WebVPN session has been established, a green "Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client" icon with padlock will appear in the Windows system tray.
  5. Launch the software you require to connect to the on-campus service or system. 

Standalone Connecting

  1. If you already have AnyConnect WebVPN client installed on your windows PC, Start it by choosing Start > All Programs > Cisco > AnyConnect VPN Client > AnyConnect VPN Client. The VPN Client will start and display its main dialog box.
  2. Ensure that the "Connect to" entry is "vpn.uoguelph.ca". Enter your Central Login ID and Password and click Connect.
  3. Upon successful authentication, the VPN server checks to see that you have the latest version of the AnyConnect VPN client installed on your computer. Updating to the latest client takes approximately 1 to 2 minutes depending on your computer's processing capabilities.
  4. When the WebVPN session has been established, a green "Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client" icon with padlock will appear in the Windows system tray.
  5. Launch the software you require to connect to the on-campus service or system.

Disconnecting

  1. Right-click on the green "Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client" icon in your system tray and choose Disconnect.
  2. The padlock on the icon will disappear after disconnecting your WebVPN session.


IPSec VPN

Connecting

Start the IPSec VPN Dialer application by choosing Start > Programs > Cisco Systems VPN Client > VPN Client. The VPN Client will start and display its main dialog box.

Ensure that the ‘University Of Guelph VPN’ connection entry is selected and click the Connect button.The IPSec VPN Client will now begin negotiation with the VPN server.

You will now be presented with the IPSec VPN Client User Authentication dialog box. Enter your Central Login ID and password in the Username and Password fields respectively, and click OK.

Upon successful authentication, you will be presented with an access restriction dialog box. Click Continue to establish your IPSec VPN session.

When the IPSec VPN session has been established, a yellow padlock icon will appear in the Windows system tray.

Launch the software you require to connect to the on-campus service or system.

Group Name: uoguelph-vpn

Group Password: vpn4120.ca

Disconnecting

Right-click on the yellow padlock icon in your system tray and choose Disconnect.

The padlock icon will remain in your system tray, but unlocked, after disconnecting your IPSec VPN session.
