Cisco NAC Agent
Cisco Network Access Control (NAC) Agent is a small program installed on Windows computers for network security purposes to ensure that the computer has the appropriate anti-virus software installed and that all Windows critical updates have been applied before accessing the network. NAC helps to protect against the spread of viruses and worms on campus.
Currently, the campus wireless network, ResNet, connections in classrooms at MacKinnon and meeting rooms at University Centre and Albert A. Thornbrough are protected with NAC.
NAC agent is not required for non-Windows based computers and handheld devices.
To Install the NAC Agent, please follow the download and install the Cisco NAC Agent tutorial.
Once the installation is complete and you have logged into the NAC agent, if you do not meet the Windows and/or Anti-Virus requirements you will need to follow these instructions in order to gain full access.
What if I prefer not to have the NAC Agent installed?
If you choose not to install the NAC agent or your computer does not meet the mandatory requirements, you will NOT be able to gain full access to the wireless or ResNet network.
Temporary Network Access: If your computer fails to meet the Windows and/or anti-virus definitions you will get temporary network access for the next 60 minutes to update your computer. With temporary network access, you can access most anti-virus vendor's resources, Microsoft and UofG / CCS websites. You will NOT be able to access any other websites. You will also not be able to:
- play on-line games
- use instant messaging/chat software
- use file sharing programs
- use non-web based email software (Outlook, Thunderbird).
For more information please see Troublsehooting the NAC agent. (link off that page with the screen shots and messaging).
Limited Network Access: If you are not able to install the NAC agent or your computer does not meet the Windows and/or virus definitions you may choose the Get Limited Network Access button on the NAC agent. You will remain logged into the network for 10 hours. With limited network access, you can only access internet through web browser. You will not be able to:
- play on-line games
- use file sharing programs
- use non-web based email software (Outlook, Thunderbird).
