ResNet Unsupported Devices

Residents may decide to bring network devices other than their computer to campus. Most of these devices will not be supported by ResNet or CCS. Please review the following important information. We will assume that you are aware of your responsibilities regarding unsupported devices if you connect them to the network.

Please be advised that your residence phone must remain connected to its network port at all times and may not be replaced by any of the following devices. If you connect any of these devices and they are found to have a negative impact on the network, you will be contacted and your connection may be disabled until the situation has been resolved.

Hardware Routers

ResNet only supports one connection per user at any one time. If you choose to have more than one device connected to the network, you do so at your own risk and without the support of CCS and ResNet. In order to implement multiple devices on the network, you will need a broadband router. We do not provide routers. Routers typically come with instructions and it will be your responsibility to set this up.

Your residence phone must remain directly connected to the network port in your room at all times. If you do bring a router, it will connect into the PC 10/100 port on your phone, if you are in a single. In double or triple rooms, one user will connect into the phone and others will connect directly to the port in the wall. Any evidence of incorrectly configured equipment impacting on the network will result in your connection being immediately cut off until the issue can be resolved. Please follow these steps to ensure you configure your broadband router correctly:

  • Read the manual that comes with your router for specific configuration instructions
  • Connect the network cable from the wall port (double/triple room) OR phone port (single room) into the connection on the router that is labelled 'WAN' or 'Internet'.
  • Do not plug the cable from the wall port into connections labelled 'LAN ports'. Most routers have multiple LAN ports available, usually numbered, in addition to the 'WAN' or 'Internet' connection. If you incorrectly plug your network cable from the wall into a numbered LAN port on your router, it will have adverse affects on the network and your connection will be disabled.
  • Change the default password on the router to something that can not be easily guessed.
  • In all cases, security measures should be taken to limit access to your router.

Wireless Access Points or Routers

The U of G Wireless service is available in many locations across campus. As of Fall 2006, the U of G Wireless service was expanded to include wireless hot spots in some locations within residence, although not in the residence rooms. Please learn more about the wireless service and where you can find it on campus. Please be aware that CCS and ResNet do not condone personal wireless routers or access points in residence rooms. Any unsupported and unsanctioned wireless access points could interfere with the U of G Wireless network and are in contravention of the U of G Wireless Policy. If we discover any conflicts, we will take action to protect the U of G Wireless network. It is very important to recognize that wireless access points can be a security concern and any residents that knowingly connect their wireless routers to the network do so at their own risk. Anyone connecting to your connection through your own personal router will also impact on your bandwidth usage.

Voice Over IP Phones

If you are thinking of bringing a VoIP (Voice over IP/broadband) phone from home, CCS has important information which should be reviewed regarding support and special issues with external VoIP phones in residence. If you choose to have your own VoIP phone as well as your computer connected at the same time, a hardware broadband router, as described above, will be necessary to connect this device to the network. ResNet and CCS will not support any third party VoIP phones other than the ones that are provided by the university for residence use.

You cannot connect your own VoIP phone to the port used by the residence IP phone.

Xbox, PlayStation or Other Online Game Equipment

Individuals may choose to bring online gaming devices to campus for their entertainment. A hardware broadband router, as described above, will be necessary to connect this device to the network. ResNet and CCS will not support these devices. Please, follow the instructions provided by these devices to ensure they are properly configured.
