ResNet Virus & Spyware
Computer Viruses
The ResNet network is similar to a large Local Area Network (LAN). When you plug into ResNet, you share the network with all ResNet users. This may make your computer more susceptible to virus problems if it is not properly secured and protected before you connect to ResNet. To secure your computer, you should ensure you have the latest Windows updates, an up-to-date anti-virus software application like McAfee VirusScan, and as many additional security steps as possible to improve your computer's security.
ResNet provides support to residents and will do our best to assist residents with virus infected computers. We expect ResNet clients to take responsibility for protecting their computer and making a best effort to clean their own computers if they become infected. If your computer becomes infected with a computer virus, ResNet may be forced to block your connection until your computer can be cleaned. We will do our best to contact residents when their connections are blocked, but we may not always be able to do so in a timely fashion. We provide a ResNet Resource CD at the residence desks for you to borrow with your student card. The CD includes virus cleaning instructions, many utilities for cleaning your computer of viruses and spyware, as well as additional tools and utilities to help you with your ResNet connection.
Spyware
Spyware (otherwise called malware) has become an ongoing concern for ResNet users. The best defense against spyware is to avoid downloading peer-to-peer software or clicking on pop ups and unknown links in emails. All of these can result in unwanted spyware/malware applications being installed on your computer. You may also allow spyware to find its way onto your computer by downloading or installing less reputable applications. Spyware not only slows down the processing of your computer, it can also cause your computer to send and receive a substantial amount of traffic, affecting your bandwidth usage.
The ResNet Resource CD, available from residence desks, includes software to help you remove spyware from your computer. It is a good idea to use this software on a regular basis as a maintenance approach to spyware. See the instructions on the CD for more information or call CCS support at x 58888.
