Preparing for Residence Internet (ResNet)
ResNet is the wired internet service that Computing and Communications Services (CCS) provides in the residences at the University of Guelph.
Here's what you need to connect to ResNet:
- A network-ready computer
- A network cable
- A supported Operating System
- Compatible Anti-virus software
- Your Central login ID and password

What you need...
1. A Network-Ready Computer
Most modern computers meet or exceed what is required to connect to ResNet:
- A network-ready computer in good working order and able to connect to a broadband ethernet connection
- A 10/100 baseT Network Interface Card (NIC) or ethernet card with an RJ-45 connection
- Installation or Recovery CD for your computer (highly recommended)
- Laptop security - if you are bringing a laptop consider purchasing a laptop lock to secure it to your desk. University of Guelph's Campus Community Police has also initiated the STOP security program for laptops.
2. A Network Cable
You will need an RJ-45 network cable (also known as an ethernet cable) to connect to ResNet in your room. Cables can be purchased at most computer or electronic stores, including some on campus or local vendors. The length of cable you need will depend on the residence room you are in and where you are located in that room. We are recommending cable lengths of 20-25 feet for most residences, but double rooms in Lennox/Addington, MacDonald Hall, East Residence (Lanark, Dundas, Glengarry) may require 30-40 foot cables.
If you have not purchased a cable before you arrive on campus, there are several locations where you can pick one up - in the small shop in Lennox Addington, at Eastside Variety and Mountain Cafeteria and at the University Bookstore. The closest Future Shop, Staples and The Source are located off campus, along Stone Road.
3. Supported Operating Systems
CCS supports Windows 7, Vista and XP (SP3) in connecting to ResNet. Learn more about configuring your Windows computer for ResNet.
Macintosh, Linux, Unix and other modern operating systems are not supported at U of G but have run successfully on the network when configured properly using the appropriate manual configuration information. We cannot guarantee that unsupported systems will be able to connect to the network. You will need to rely on your computer vendor support for operating system issues.
4. Compatible Anti-Virus software - get McAfee!
Your computer will need a compatible anti-virus software installed. We recommend installing McAfee VirusScan that is supported by CCS and provided at no cost to U of G members from our Software Distribution website.
Ensure the latest anti-virus update definitions have been applied and these updates are set to automatically apply. If you have a different anti-virus software (other than the McAfee that we distribute), you'll need to ensure it is listed on the compatible anti-virus software list to ensure that it works with our network.
Spyware (malware) has also become an ongoing concern for ResNet users. See Protect your PC information for more details.
5. Central Login Account and Password
You will need your U of G Central Login Account and password to get on to ResNet. This is the same ID and password used to get into Gryph Mail. You should have received your Central Login ID information when you enrolled with the University of Guelph. If you don't have an ID and password, contact the CCS Help Centre.
You should also know about...
NAC (Network Access Control)
Network Access Control (NAC) authenticates and validates users connecting to the campus networks, including ResNet. NAC helps to protect against the spread of viruses and worms on campus. Used in conjunction with NAC is a desktop application called NAC Agent, which ensures that all those logging in to the network have sufficient virus protection and system updates installed. Learn more about Network Access Control and the NAC agent.
Pre-installing the NAC Agent (Windows)
NAC will be activated on Tuesday, September 6 at which time Windows computers will need to download and install the NAC Agent. This will occur automatically when connecting to ResNet, however you can pre-install the NAC Agent before arriving on campus! This will not impact your usage of networks outside of U of G. Visit CCS Software Downloads, login with your Central Login Account and password, select Cisco NAC Agent in the products list and follow the instructions.
Other Network Devices on ResNet
ResNet only supports one computer per connection at any one time. If you choose to bring unsupported network devices to campus, you will be responsible for configuring and maintaining these devices and for any issues that arise on the network as a result. Please note that the residence phone provided in your room is not optional; it is an integral part of our telecommunications system and must be connected to the network at all times.
Wireless Availability
Although not available in residence rooms, the U of G Wireless service is available in many locations across campus, including wireless hot spots in some locations within residence. Learn more about the wireless service and where you can find it on campus. CCS and ResNet do not condone personal wireless routers or access points in residence rooms. Any unsupported and unsanctioned wireless access points could interfere with the U of G Wireless network. Learn more about the U of G Wireless Policy.
Policies Governing ResNet
When you activate on ResNet you agree to abide by these policies.
