Getting Started

This guide will provide step-by-step instructions for hosting a MSN Messenger meeting. For more detailed instructions on specific program features see the Windows Live Messenger How To.

Windows Live Messenger video calls are limited to two people and the program’s features are limited but Messenger is fairly easy to operate on a windows PC. This would be recommended for informal meetings or conversations that might require some file sharing.

CCS Limited Support Statement: Though we do provide you with a tutorial for its use, Windows Live Messenger is not formally supported by the CCS.

What you will you need:

  • Webcam
  • Microphone
  • Headphones (highly recommended)
  • Internet connection

STEP 1: Install and register

If you already have Windows Live Messenger, you may skip this step.

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to: “download.live. com/messenger
  2. Click on the “Download” button.
  3. If you are using Firefox, you will need to authorize the download by clicking on the “Save File” button. If you are running Explorer, click on the “Run” button.
  4. Carefully read and follow the instructions provided by the installation wizard.
  5. Click on the “Sign up” link in the Windows Live pop-up that follows the installation wizard.
  6. Fill out the information as prompted. You can use a non-windows e-mail to sign up for a Windows ID.
  7. Check your e-mail inbox to verify your Windows ID.
  8. You may now sign in to Windows Live Messenger

STEP 2: Sign-in to Windows Live Messenger

  1. Start Windows Live Messenger. It should be located in your “Start” menu under “All programs”.
  2. Enter the e-mail address associated with your Windows Live ID.
  3. Enter the password associated with your Windows Live ID.

STEP 3: Add Contacts

  1. Go to the “Contacts” tab at the top of the window.
  2. Select “Add a contact…” from the drop down menu.
  3. Enter the contact’s e-mail into the “Instant Messaging Address” field.
  4. Click “Next”.
  5. You may choose to include a message with the contact request.
  6. Click “Next”.
  7. Wait for the contact to accept your invitation.

STEP 4: Make a Video Call

  1. Click on the “Actions” tab at the top of the window.
  2. Go to the “Video” menu in the “Actions” tab and select “Start a Video Call”.
  3. Select the desired contact from your list of available contacts.
  4. Wait for your contact to accept.
