Personal Websites

Personal Websites

Students, staff and faculty have access to the Personal Webhosting service.  Any individual or organization with a U of G Central Login Account can publish a personal website.

Personal websites at U of G are distinguished by having a tilda (~) after the domain name. For example: www.uoguelph.ca/~userid, whereas organizational websites have no tilda, i.e. www.uoguelph.ca/orgname.

Publishing Tools

We provide an online web tool called Publish, to set up your personal website and to upload and manage your personal website files.

You may also choose to use a stand-alone client such as FileZilla or Dreamweaver to manage your personal website files. Details on using these tools is available on the Other Publishing Tools page.

Personal Websites Usage

Personal websites are intended for personal use.  If you are looking to publish a website for an campus organization, a department, club, or research project please use the Organizational Webhosting Service. If you're looking to create a website in support of an on-campus course, distance education offering or other teaching-related initiative, visit CourseLink (D2L).

Personal websites are hosted from your Unix home directory so the size of your website is limited by your quota

Website Address (URL)

The URL of your personal website is http://www.uoguelph.ca/~username where username is your Central Login ID

For example, if your email address is jdoe@uoguelph.ca, then your personal website URL will look like http://www.uoguelph.ca/~jdoe

Note: If you use an email alias, such as john.doe@uoguelph.ca, your website does not use this alias. Your site will be found at http://www.uoguelph.ca/~jdoe and not http://www.uoguelph.ca/~john.doe.
