Successful Fall 2005 Alpha Course

We are grateful for the completion of the 5th annual offering of Alpha at the University of Guelph. For the past couple of years we've had live speakers to present the Alpha topics, but because many participants have been Chinese students, we purchased the Alpha tapes with Chinese sub-titles. They were a real blessing! One of the participants said that he finally understood the concept of Jesus substituting himself for us. Some very challenging questions were asked and as one of the small group leaders put it - leading an Alpha group helps me the concepts of my faith into concise words.

We had a smaller number this year with about 14 participants, including one person from off campus, a staff member and spouse as well as students. Smaller groups have their advantage in that we had only one small group for discussions and people got to know each other very well. The smaller numbers were also a blessing as the Holy Spirit weekend was hosted at the home of Art Hill. The atmosphere was much more comfortable and welcoming in that setting. Please continue to pray that the Alpha graduates will continue to seek Christ.

In the new year, James VanderBerg, the Christian Reformed chaplain, will be doing a follow up to the Alpha course called a Life Worth Living and we would appreciate your prayers that many from the Alpha group will attend.

On behalf of the Alpha Team - Marg and Ray Middleton, Art Hill, Sandy McIlwraith, Alex Kalimbira, Luisa Franceschi, and Helle Thomsen - I would like to thank everyone who supported the Alpha course this year, whether prayerfully, financially or in supplying meals for the sessions. It's been a wonderful experience and we give the glory to God

Many blessings

We celebrate well!

Sandy and HenkThirty people were present on a very warm 24th of June at the home of Art and Margaret Hill. The occasion was partly to honor retiring Huron Campus minister, Ed den Haan, partly to welcome the new Campus minister, Jamie VanderBerg, and partly just to celebrate God's goodness.

Special guests included: Rob Mann, Chair of the Canadian and Scientific Affiliation, and his wife Nancy; Kirk Durston, Director of the New Scholars' Society and his wife Pattie; John North, Professor of English Literature at Waterloo, and his wife Roberta.

We were also privileged to bless Thomas Rauchenstein, a recent M.Sc. grad in philosophy, who is on his way for further study at Labris Fellowship in Switzerland.
