The library is conducting a study of how students make use of the facilities, and we need your help.

Are you new to the Library and willing to give up 20 minutes of your time in exchange for a small reward? If "yes" is the answer, then you are who we are looking for. We would love to receive your input to a study of how students use the Library. We just need you to go through a brief survey with us that will be stress free, anonymous ... and requires no experience whatsoever. Your input is essential to our understanding of the way that people use the LIbrary, and contributes to making the Library a better place for everyone (and there's a reward at the end).

To volunteer, send an email to dhorne@uoguelph.ca

1000th Electronic Thesis Submitted

Library News - Wed, 05/22/2013 - 13:05

In 2006, the University of Guelph began accepting theses and dissertations (ETDs) electronically through the Atrium, the institution’s open access digital repository. In 2011, ETD submission was mandated by the university. Today, U of G celebrates a significant milestone as the 1000th ETD has been submitted.

“The deposit of the 1000th thesis, Sarathi Weraduwage’s Harnessing the anabolic properties of dark respiration to enhance sink activity at elevated CO2 using Arabidopsis thaliana L. with partially-suppressed mitochondrial pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase, marks a true occasion for the Atrium, as both a point of access and the preservation repository for the scholarly, intellectual and creative output of the university community.” said Rebecca Graham, CIO and Chief Librarian, “This milestone can also be viewed as a manifestation of our institutional commitment to the betterment of life.”

The electronic submission process is quick and easy and provides numerous benefits to ETD authors. The Atrium is licensed under the standard Creative Commons license which means that all unpublished materials allow authors to select the rights they wish to retain and those they want to grant. Authors of previously published works also have options. One of the major benefits of having ETDs publicly available is that it increases visibility and readership thus significantly increasing public access to the institutions’ scholarly output. Each ETD is assigned a permanent link and preservation methods will be taken to allow for perpetual access.

The submission process is managed by the Office of Graduate Studies in partnership with the Library. Once theses are approved and placed in the Atrium, they are harvested by National Library and Archives Canada.

The Library is pleased to announce a change in the way articles requests are filled.

Normal 0 false false false EN-CA X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";}

When an article request is completed using RACER or TUGdoc, requesters will be emailed a link to an electronic copy of their requested article, if licensing permits. If licensing prohibits an electronic copy, requestors will be contacted and a paper copy will be provided.

The switch to electronic fulfillment will reduce turnaround time for article delivery and will significantly reduce the amount of paper used for this service.

For more information on Racer and TUGdoc, please see the InterLibrary Loan pages.
