IT Project Management

IT project success = IT project management.

The Standish Group annually studies and reports on IT project success. The results are always sobering. The 2009 data is especially so since "this year's results show a marked decrease in project success rates, with 32% of all projects succeeding which are delivered on time, on budget, with required features and functions" according to Jim Johnson, chairman of The Standish Group. Apparently 44% were unsuccessful because they were late, over budget, or delivered less than required. Another 24% failed because they were cancelled or, worse yet, completed but never used.

Ouch.

Computing and Communications Services (CCS) developed and has been using a formal project management framework for all its projects - large and small. The templates and processes it has adopted are lightweight enough to be used by all project leaders but formal enough to enable the planning and tracking that keeps projects focused.

The CCS Project Management Framework is now available for use by others. Posted on the CIO IT Governance website, the Project Management Framework provides an executive summary and a more detailed overview. In addition, all the templates used by CCS are available on request.
