Knowledge Ontario
Good ideas, it seems, must struggle to find their proper place. Who would have thought that bringing together all the libraries in Ontario (public, school, college & university) to create Knowledge Ontario (a set of digital library services for all Ontarians) would not be worthy of provincial support?
The funding for KO has always been episodic and uncertain. Inspite of this KO has created some amazing, powerful, and well used services: Our Ontario; Ask Ontario; Connect Ontario; Resource Ontario; Learn Ontario. The sustainability and growth of KO is now threatened by lack of core funding.
The price of inaction is the loss of a tremendously valuable resource for Ontario. Join the KO Matters initiative; read Kimberly Silk's recommendations for supporting KO.
The Knowledge Ontario mission is simple and profound:
"To provide equitable and seamless access to high quality, digital content and innovative services to people at every stage of life, reflective of Ontario’s diverse communities through cross-sector engagement and collaboration.
To provide Ontarians with the digital tools and resources they need to build stronger, healthier communities and participate fully in the 21st century knowledge economy."
This is a vision worth struggling for.
