New and Noteworthy

Avatar

AvatarAvatarHow to explain this? Fabulous technology; brilliant rendering of an entire world; good, solid but not too deep storyline; entertaining. So why did I not like Avatar?

I really liked the first half; the second half became an assault on my senses and rather than be engaged by it, I got bored. Bored. It was too much, too quickly. I semi tuned out.

The 3D was well done; subtle in fact. And perhaps that is the source of my discontent. Avatar was mostly just excessive. A good movie ruined by such a heavy technical hand and by the need to impress us at every scene.

I will see it again; I suspect my reaction will be different the second time.

Is Twitter Killing the English Language?

A few weeks ago the Library hosted a Forum on the nature and impact of Twitter on language. Lots of fun with tremendous contribtuions by Susan Brown, Stuart Robertson, Aimee Morrison and Peter Martyn. A few short videos from the event are up on the Library's YouTube Channel.

Nice review by Rob O'Flanagan in the Guelph Mercury.
