Class of 2009 - What's next?

On February 17, 2009, 25 students graduated with their Honours Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Public Policy. At the summer convocation held on June 11, 2009, 71 students graduated with their Honours BA in CJPP. Below are what some of this 2009 graduating class are doing next.

Meg Barker (June 2009 CJPP graduate) is attending the University of Toronto where she is studying for her MA at the Centre of Criminology.

Jillian Cleroux is completing her Paralegal Education diploma at Humber College as well as working as a Research/Project Assistant with the municipal offices of Tay Valley Township. (July 2010)

Gretchen Reitzel is attending law school at the University of Western Ontario. (October 2009) "Law school is a lot of work but it is also interesting! I got a volunteer job through pro-bono students Canada working at the Family Law Clinic in the court house. It has been a great hands-on experience so far!"

Sandra Aigbinode received her MA in Political Science and Development Studies at McGill University in the spring of 2011 and will be beginning her law degree at McGill in September 2011 (July 2011)

Stephanie Fernane completed her MA in Criminology and Sociolegal Studies at the University of Toronto in 2010. Since graduating, she has been volunteering at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health doing research on violence risk assessments for youth. (April 2011)

Class of 2008 - What's Next?

On June 10, 2008, 82 students graduated with their Honours Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Public Policy. Below are some examples of what some members in this class will be doing after graduation.

Andrea Webb has advised us (January 2009) that she is working as a client account representative for the American division of Manulife Financial in downtown Toronto. It is "a little bit of a different career choice as a CJPP grad, but I am really enjoying it thus far."

Val Jarzylo will be attending Durham College and studying "Youth Corrections and Intervention." This program involves the study of juveniles who have behavioural problems. It is a co-op program with a placement in the second semester. It is an eight-month program.

Lauren Vriezema has advised us (October 2008) that she is working as a Court Reporter with the Ministry of the Attorney General in Hamilton.

Matthew Wolfson will begin his studies in the MA program here at U of G in Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies in Fall 2009. Since graduating with a degree in CJPP, he has been teaching in South Korea.

Paul Skinner is teaching in Japan. "I am working for Amity, a branch of the AEON corporation geared towards teaching children conversational English. I get to teach children ranging from 6 months old (accompanied by their parent) to 18 year olds. The school where I am teaching at is in Niigata City in the Niigata Prefecture in northern Japan. I have set up a journal and picture site online so everyone can keep up with my journey as it unfolds." www.paulvsjapan.wordpress.com

Lindsey Ushtchenko was awarded an internship in the Ontario Internship Program. She will be working in Toronto as a First Nations Policing Standards Development Intern. Update (June 1, 2009) Lindsey accepted a position as a policy advisor with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure in the First Nation and Metis Policy and Partnerships Office.

Shayla McIntyre will be pursuing a Masters degree in Human Resources Management at King's College in England

Class of 2007 - What's Next?

"After graduating in February 2007, I began working with the the Ministry of the Attorney General, Court Services Division in Norfolk County. At the end of 2009, I joined the Ministry of Children and Youth Services as a Youth Services Officer at Sprucedale Youth Centre. As of October 2010, I accepted a one year contract to work within the same Ministry with Mississauga Youth Probation...I am currently considering building on my career by taking an MSW program at the end of my one year contract with youth probation."  Steve Collins, November 2010

Class of 2006 - What's Next?

Chase Irwin has advised us (November 2008) that he began his law studies at Bond University in Australia and has subsequently transferred to the University of Ottawa Law School. He anticipates graduating in 2010. 

Katey Horseman has advised us (December 22, 2006) that she is joining the Halton Region Police Service as a police constable. She is currently attending police college in Aylmer. "I hope to get into our Forensic Identification or into some Behavioural Sciences/Profiling departments.

hris Harrington has advised us (December 3, 2007) that he is pursuing a Masters of International Studies (Political Science) at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.

Michelle Bly is beginning her MCA (masters of Criminologie Applique/Masters of Applied Criminology) at the University of Ottawa. "I am doing more of an applied masters program complete with field placements, course work and a research paper instead of a major thesis. I begin my first work placement with the National Crime Prevention Centre (part of the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness) this week." (September 10, 2006)

Mike Kirk is beginning his MA in Criminology at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Craig Lockhart has accepted a position of Surveillance Operator at the Grand River Raceway Slots in Elora. "Basically the job involves monitoring the gaming floor and reporting on occurrences that could be detrimental to the business, patrons or employees." (May 2006)

Class of 2005 - What's Next?

Update (Oct. 25, 2007) Jennifer Darmon is currently working full time at the John Howard Society of Windsor-Essex County as a counsellor/bail supervision caseworker. "I work with youth that have been suspended from school in a drug/alcohol intervention program. I am also a caseworker in the bail supervision program where we supervise clients who do not have a surety to bail them out otherwise. I am extremely happy with my position as I feel I am now hopefully making a difference in some of these people's lives. I appreciate all of the skills from my four years at the University of Guelph."

Lorileigh (Elle) Fremit went on to do her MA in Political Science at U of G and after graduating became a policy analyst in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development, Corporate Administration and Services Directorate in the Planning and Public Health Integration Branch, Public Health Agency of Canada.

Dave Willitts went to Teacher's College after graduating and will be teaching Grade 7 at River Heights Elementary School in Caledonia in the 2007-2008 school year.

Update (May 29, 2007) Tom Broadfoot advised us that he is a Police Constable with the Durham Regional Police Service and is currently serving in the City of Oshawa. "It is a wonderful job and I love going to work each and every day. I credit the university and its professors with helping me obtain the knowledge and critical thinking skills which enabled me to follow my dream of becoming a police officer."

Andrew Clark is client representative at Marsh Associates in Toronto Update (April 2007) Andrew has recently advised us that he has just commenced his MBA at Wilfrid Laurier's Toronto campus.

Lauren Bunton just completed her Master of Arts in Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) at Ryerson University. Update (October 26, 2006).Her Major Research Paper was titled "The Supreme Court's Role in Setting Policy Parameters for Disability Issues." Ashley Noto will be starting an MSc in Environmental Management in the School for Resource and Environmental Studies at Dalhousie University in Halifax in Fall 2006. Update (May 14, 2007) "The program here at Dal has been great. The School for Resource and Environmental Studies is this little world of graduate students only. The profs and support staff are great, we're like one big happy family. I have finished year one and I am currently working on my internship with Nova Scotia Power Inc. in their renewables branch. I will be looking at environmental impacts of tidal power development in the Bay of Fundy."

Laura Sparling will be starting her MA in Political Science at the University of Toronto this fall (2006). She has been working in Victoria, BC this past year working as an administrative assistant with Scotia McLeod. Welcome back to Ontario, Laura!!

Isaac and Jacob Virag are both working as youth counsellors at Avalon Specialized Services for Hard to Serve Youth. This is a private facility in the Guelph area. Update (March 2007) Since July 2006, Isaac has been working for Family and Children's Services of the Region of Waterloo. "Currently I work for a program called Intensive Support Services. It is the first program that offers a province wide service. Prior to this, all Children's Aid Societies acted independently from one another. I was able to be a part of history! (which is pretty amazing!)" Update (April 2008) Isaac advised me that he will be beginning his Masters of Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University in the fall of 2008. He also relayed on the information that Jacob is a police officer with the Niagara Police force.

Katie Hay and Dana Collier are both attending CDI college (at different campuses). CDI is a private college that puts the normal 2 year paralegal college curriculum into a 7 month school portion and then students have a mandatory 2 month job placement. Update (July 2006)Katie graduated from the paralegal course at CDI. "I have been hired by Research in Motion (RIM) to be a legal assistant within their legal department. I'm completely excited about this amazing opportunity and equally scared!"

Lynsy Church has been attending Fanshawe College and is in the Social Service Worker Fast Track program. The program is 10 months long and it includes a field placement. "I'm going to be placed at the Canadian Mental Health Association in Stratford. I start my placement tomorrow. I'm going to begin by working with the Court Support Workers. I'm very excited!! Update (13 September 2006) "I have been on contract at the Canadian Mental Health Association for the summer and applied for four positions with the agency. I had an interview today and accepted an offer this afternoon as a case manager for the concurrent disorders program. It's new and I'm really excited about it. I get to do lots of training and learn a whole new set of skills." Her position is with CMHA Huron-Perth. Congratulations Lynsy on your new job and engagement!!

Patrick Ley is attending the University of Windsor Law School

Sara Nesbitt began working as a Youth Probation Officer for the Ministry of Children and Youth Services in Kirkland Lake at the end of June 2005. Her July 2005 Update reads: "It is going well so far and I am really enjoying it. This is exactly what I wanted to do so I am very happy to be doing this so quickly after finishing my degree."

Cathy Sheahan Update (Feb. 2007) Cathy has just accepted a full-time position with Waterloo Regional Homes as a housing support and outreach coordinator. "My role is to help people with mental health issues maintain their housing, advocating for them when necessary, linking them with community resources and providing short-term support (3-6 months)." Update (Nov. 16, 2005) "I just finished my first day at Dunara as a Respite Support Worker. So, I will be supporting people who are in mental health crisis that are using the respite bed." (Dunara is a group home for adults with mental illness and is one of several homes under the umbrella of Dufferin/Wellington Homes). She is also working part-time as a crisis line relief worker here in Guelph.

Adam Orfanakos is studying for an MA in Critical Disability Studies at York University. Update (March 21, 2007) Adam completed his MA in October 2006 and his Masters Research Paper "was about the possibility of using the expansion of part time work opportunities to accommodate disabled persons who could not work full time hours." He will be presenting his research at a feminism conference being held in Windsor in May 2007 and at a social problems conference in New York in August. He has just accepted a position with the Ombudsman of Ontario and starts in two weeks. "My title is an Early Resolutions Officer and I will be responsible for handling the intake of complaints, providing referral information, initiating resolutions to complaints and so on. I am really excited, particularly so given that the current ombudsman, Andre Marin, is pushing the office into progressive areas and since he was the one who handled my complaint when I was in the Forces." Jenni Fraser will be studying for an MA in Criminology at the University of Ottawa. Update (May 28, 2007) "I've submitted my thesis for an MA in Criminology at the University of Ottawa entitled "Representations of a 'Female Experience' of War: The Pursuit for a Feminist Criminology of War", where I looked at how women and their experiences are represented in war films...Currently I am working as a research assistant at uOttawa's Institute for the Prevention of Crime (IPC). We are a relatively new research institute (Sept. 2006) but I have been involved in some very interesting and influential work for the provinces of BC and Alberta so far...You can check out our website at http://www.prevention-crime.ca to see some of the other interesting things we are doing. I am planning on continuing to research for and with the IPC in September when I start my PhD in Criminology at uOttawa. My main goal will be to link feminism with crime prevention, and to focus on a broader definition of violence against women and look at new ways we can measure and ultimately address these issues politically and socially."

Jason Chong Update (June 2007) Jason completed his MA in the Department of Political Science at the University of Guelph and is now attending the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education to get his teaching degree.

Class of 2004. Where are they now?

James Popham has advised us (January 2007) that he completed an MA in Criminology at Griffith University in Australia and is working for Operation Migration . (This organization was the basis for the film "Fly Away Home"). "We write a semi-annual magazine for all of the donors and my job is to find some contributors. The theme for the Spring 2007 edition of INformation is focussing on habitat loss/environmental impacts or on more topic specific subjects such as breeding and egg-laying." James and his partner live in Port Perry.

Cynthia Wagner (now Sewell) has recently advised us (February 2008) that she is now working as a Rehabilitation Case Coordinator/Addictions in the Community Outreach and Support Program at the Homewood Health Centre in Guelph. Congratulations on your new position. Cynthia Wagner has recently advised us (September 15, 2006) that following a post-degree course in addictions and concurrent disorders at CDI, she is beginning her placement at the Hope Place Women's Treatment Centre in Milton.

After taking some time off to travel, Sheena Alexander has advised us (July 2006) that she will be attending law school at the University of Manitoba.

Brooke Sillaby-Quist has advised that she has a new guide dog named Cessna and that Phoenix has become her pet. Brooke has recently married and is in a post-degree program in Social Work at McMaster University. The course is 5 semesters long. "The first two semesters you do four classes and then in the summer I will complete the rest of my classes as well as do a placement twice a week."

Caroline Laurin is a journalist and producer of a one hour newsmagazine show for CKHC, 96.9 in Toronto. Update (26 June 2007) Caroline advised us that she has recently moved to Ottawa where she is now an Associate Producer for CBC's The National. As a producer, an area that she would like to start with are women and social justice issues. Congratulations on your new position Caroline!!

After completing his MPA (Local Government) at the University of Western Ontario in summer 2005, Paul Fischer is now working as an Economist in the Municipal Finance Branch at the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing

Jennifer Zambosco is pursuing a 16-month post-degree program at Humber College in Child and Youth Work. During the 16-month program, there are three field placements. Anyone interested in finding out more about this program can email Jennifer @ jzambosco@hotmail.com.

Peter Zambosco took a securities course after completing his degree and is now working at Berkshire Securities in Oakville.

Pat O'Neill will be working in an internship program beginning in September 2005. He will be working at the University of Vienna in the College of Law. "I will be helping German legal professors complete legal journals and working on a special project of my choice - probably something involving the UN and Native treaty negotiations." Update (10 May 2007). "I was successful at getting into both my choices of law schools: UBC and UVic...I have decided to accept UVic's offer and will be attending in the fall. Hope everything is well with you in Guelph!"

Josh Delegarde is working as a child/youth worker at Casatta Wellington - an open custody detention centre for male and female young offenders ages 12-15 in Guelph.

Heather Fogo is attending the University of Windsor Law School Update (August 2006)"I'm going to be finishing my last year at the University of Ottawa on a letter of permission from Windsor and am really excited about it because Ottawa has a ton of interesting courses especially in international law and particularly the laws of armed conflict. I transferred to the Navy last year and am working part time as an Intelligence Officer. This summer I have been working at SmithValeriote Law Firm in Guelph and I spent 3 weeks out in BC finishing some Navy training. I have an articling job all lined up for next year with a civil litigation firm in Ottawa that argues at all court levels, so it should be great court experience. "The program starts in September and lasts 2 years (1 year if you have a BSW) and it is structured so that you spend one semester in classes and the next semester in a practicum placement of your choice."

Joanne Trozzolo Update (Nov. 7, 2007) "I just finished my Masters at UCLA in April of this year and am working for the Centre of Forensic Sciences in downtown Toronto, working with the Chief Coroner of Ontario. I hope to be here for a number of years, since every day brings such challenges and new experiences! It's definitely a great experience and currently, I'm working in the autopsy room, and eventually, hope to branch out and work directly with the homicide unit."

Class of 2003. Where are they now?

Since graduating in 2003, Kathryn Bliss has been working in Truro, Nova Scotia as a facilitator with the John Howard Restorative Justice Society and has helped with a job search program for young offenders. She has recently been a Committee Member on the Citizen's Advisory Committee, Truro Parole Office. She has recently advised us (March 4, 2006) that she has been accepted into the M.A. program in Criminology at St. Mary's University in Halifax. Congratulations Kathryn!!

Taunya Lewis has recently advised us (October 13, 2005) that she will be heading to the RCMP Academy, Depot Division in Regina in November. This has been her longtime goal. Congratulations Taunya!! 

Marla Thompson has been hired by the O.P.P.and has been posted to the Essex County O.P.P. (Tecumseh Detachment)

Arun Dhanota completed her MA in Political Science at the University of Guelph in 2005 and began work for the John Howard Society as a case worker in Brampton. Update (December 2007). "I am currently pursuing 2, post-graduate certificates: one in Mental Health and Addictions at Ryerson University and the other at the University of Toronto in Solution-Focused Counselling. I am now working at Operation Springboard as a Community Justice Worker - Program Facilitator.

KH studied and lived in France for a year after graduating and since October 2004, she has been working with the Provincial Office of Legal Aid Ontario.

Sean McDonald worked as Dennis Mills' legislative assistant after graduating. After the 2004 election, he accepted the position of Special Projects Co-ordinator for the Wellesley Central Health Corporation

Julie McDougall (soon to be Ireland) has completed her MPA at the University of Western Ontario in the Local Government Program. She is now working as a Legislative Coordinator in the Clerk's Department at the City of Brampton. 

Amanda Green is pursuing a Masters in Criminology at the University of Ottawa. Update (March 2007) "I am a permanent federal government employee currently working as a Planning Analyst. I am responsible for drafting a lot of corporate reports for Parliament and for the overall planning of the Agency. So far - so good...although I hope my next post will be a little more criminology related. There's a lot of opportunity up here though and a lot of moving around between departments. I will be going on language training shortly to become bilingual, which will also open many doors I hope."

Karma Call is enrolled in a post degree 12 month diploma at Georgian College studying addictions treatment and prevention. Update - we received an email from Karma (18 October 2005) and she has advised us that she is in the 2nd year of a Master of Public Policy program at Simon Fraser University. "It is a new program, so not too many people know about it. But it is a really great opportunity, not only because Vancouver is a great city to live in, but also because the program has a lot of potential. The program has both a thesis component which must be a piece of timely and relevant policy analysis, and a work term." Audrey Lemieux is pursuing an MA in the joint Guelph-McMaster Program in Public Policy. After graduating with her MA, she completed her year-long appointment as a legislative intern at Queen's Park in the Ontario Legislative Internship Program(OLIP) Update: Audrey has just advised us (August 16, 2005): "I am happy to report that after participating in the OLIP (highly recommend it!) Melinda Vine is attending law school at the University of Western Ontario. Update (Feb. 5, 2007)"I have completed my three years of law school and wrote my bar exams last summer. I am currently finishing my ten month articling term with Harrison Pensa in London, Ontario. I get called to the Bar in June of this year. It has all been a fantastic experience."

Mary Snow Nguyen (now Wyga) Update (October 2007) "I am now a Project Analyst in the Rural Community Development Branch at OMAFRA. Our focus is on rural economic development and to help in community revitalization, business retention and expansion, and improving infrastructure. My role is to assess files from municipal clients in order to help provide funding for these initiatives. Our programs are cost-shared federally-provincially0municipally so I have a great opportunity to work with other levels of government as well as horizintally with other provincial ministries, such as MTO, MOE and PIR." Mary has been with OMAFRA in several different capacities since graduating in CJPP
