How to respond when dealing with a student in personal difficulty
- take time to listen to thoughts and feelings in a non-threatening way
- take the problem seriously-avoid judging, evaluating and criticizing
- let the student know that you are concerned in nonjudgmental terms
- give the student personal support but be cautious about giving advice-maintain clear and consistent boundaries
- let the student know your personal limits and the limits of your time
- don't feel that you have to solve the problem yourself-do not assume personal responsibility
- refer the student directly to Counselling Services and/or inform them of the services available
Except in cases of clear emergency, respect the student's right to accept or refuse counseling. If it is not an emergency, it is important to give the student some time to think things over and consider alternatives. If you have time to meet again, you can share your concerns and recommendations clearly once more. Acknowledge, validate and discuss with them as needed, and demonstrate your commitment to assisting them by following up subsequently. However, if a student wishes to continue to talk to you, then consider your own personal limits with respect to your energy and ability to help and maintain clear boundaries.
When dealing with disruptive and/or harassing behaviour by students in an academic situation
If a student disrupts a class, the instructor should indicate to them that the behaviour is disruptive and ask that they conform to expected standards.
If the disruption continues, the instructor will ask the student to leave the classroom and notify the department chair. The department chair should also be notified if the instructor is concerned about that individual's safety.
If the student refuses to leave the classroom, Security Services should be called at extension 52000 to assist the instructor in ejecting the student. Security Services should also be contacted if the instructor considers they are in immediate danger or is concerned for their safety.
For advice and consultation, Counselling Services at extension 53244 should be contacted.
