Order - DERMAPTERA
(Greek, derma = skin, pteron = wing)
Common Name: earwigs
Distribution: Cosmopolitan

Description
Earwigs are easy to recognize because no other common insect has similar forceps-like cerci. The only remotely similar insects are some eyeless, pale, rarely encountered diplurans. Most North Americans will only encounter one species of earwig, the European Earwig illustrated here.
