An information table will be set up in the University Centre courtyard near the south elevators.

The grants are worth 30 per cent of average tuition fees — about $800 for most university students.

Social justice activist, academic, journalist and feminist Judy Rebick gives a free public talk. She will discuss the formation and future of the Occupy Movement, which made headlines in North America and around the world in the fall.

Rebick will share her experiences at Occupy Wall Street, Toronto and Vancouver and talk about her participation in movements since the 1960s. U of G political science professor Tamara Small will facilitate a discussion with Rebick and the audience.

A journalist by trade, Rebick founded rabble.ca, an independent online news site, and has written several books, including Transforming Power: From the Personal to the Political. She also hosted two national CBC television shows and is part of a regular media panel for the CBC program Q with Jian Ghomeshi.

Her talk is free and open to the University community and general public. It’s organized by the Civic Imprints Speaker Series and Global Issues Discussion Series in Student Life.

Alexander, a former lieutenant-governor of Ontario, was appointed U of G chancellor in 1991 and served for five terms, a record among Canadian universities. In 2007, he was named chancellor emeritus to recognize his years of dedication to the University.

An “Environmental Outlook on Agriculture: A Public Perspective” is the theme of the 18th annual Environmental Sciences Symposium (ESS) taking place at the University of Guelph. Four themes will be highlighted: research, future/innovation, local community and practice.

The 2012 ESS features lectures by 18 experts from academia and industry. The roster includes:

- Ralph Martin, professor and Loblaw Chair in Sustainable Food Production at the Ontario Agricultural College, on “The Challenges of Sustaining Food Production in the 21st Century”;

- Sylvain Charlebois, professor and associate dean at the College of Management and Economics, on “Shaping the Future of Agriculture and Food: Outlook 2035”;

- Gerry Stephenson, School of Environmental Sciences professor emeritus, on “Pesticides and Global Food Production for 2050 and Beyond”; and

- Karen Landman, landscape architecture professor in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development, on “Urban Agriculture Trends: A North American Perspective”.

Every year, students in the School of Environmental Sciences host the ESS with a fresh focus on a relevant environmental issue. The student-run, non-profit event aims to enhance the knowledge of those interested in learning more about the environment.

Co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science and the Institute for Liberal Studies, this talk will examine whether Canada’s illicit drug policy should remain geared towards prohibition or should decriminalization/ legalization policies be pursued? The panelists listed below will provide various perspectives on these and other issues related to drug policy and take questions from the audience.

- Patricia Erickson is an adjunct professor of sociology and criminology at the University of Toronto and a senior scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

- Victoria Henderson, a former print journalist and magazine editor, is now a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography at Queen’s University.

- Margret Kopala is a former federal political candidate and freelance journalist for the Ottawa Citizen, who has written about drug policy issues, including the Insite drug treatment facility in Vancouver. She is currently the president of the Centre for Immigration Policy Reform.

The moderator of this discussion is Prof. Andy Hathaway, Department of Sociology and Anthropology. He has published extensively in the areas of illicit drug use, harm reduction and drug policy.

The United Nations declared 2012 as the International Year of Co-operatives. Following their lead, the 2012 Guelph Organic Conference: Seeds of Co-operation is marking its 31st year by recognizing the spirit of co-operation among the dedicated people who have made "organic" a household word.

Throughout the four-day conference, workshops will feature marketing, management and growing co-operatives, and the development of community seed systems, seed banks, seed research and organic seed development for the common good. The Wellness Centre is celebrating National Eating Disorder Awareness Week by hosting an educational eating disorder and body image awareness exposé organized by Acceptance Without Limits (AWL).

The event aims to be a fun way for students and the community to address topics such as health at every size, eating disorders, body image and other related topics. There will be multimedia presentations, body cast-making and cookie decorating, as well as information from a variety of on- and off-campus partners.

AWL is a student-run group dedicated to promoting size acceptance and educating both the campus and the community about related issues, including positive body image, self-esteem, healthy eating and fad diets. The Wellness Centre is the educational arm of Student Health Services and is one of 24 peer helper program units on campus.
