An “Environmental Outlook on Agriculture: A Public Perspective” is the theme of the 18th annual Environmental Sciences Symposium (ESS) taking place at the University of Guelph. Four themes will be highlighted: research, future/innovation, local community and practice.
The 2012 ESS features lectures by 18 experts from academia and industry. The roster includes:
- Ralph Martin, professor and Loblaw Chair in Sustainable Food Production at the Ontario Agricultural College, on “The Challenges of Sustaining Food Production in the 21st Century”;
- Sylvain Charlebois, professor and associate dean at the College of Management and Economics, on “Shaping the Future of Agriculture and Food: Outlook 2035”;
- Gerry Stephenson, School of Environmental Sciences professor emeritus, on “Pesticides and Global Food Production for 2050 and Beyond”; and
- Karen Landman, landscape architecture professor in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development, on “Urban Agriculture Trends: A North American Perspective”.
Every year, students in the School of Environmental Sciences host the ESS with a fresh focus on a relevant environmental issue. The student-run, non-profit event aims to enhance the knowledge of those interested in learning more about the environment.
Tickets (including lunch) are $10 in advance.
