Organized by graduate students at U of G, Philopolis will address issues of specific interest in Guelph, such as the production and consumption of food and the social impacts of art, as well as questions about the roles of science and philosophy in the community.

The mandate of Philopolis is simple: to engage the local philosophical community with the broader community of which it is a part. Philosophy has so much to share on issues of everyday life, and both sides have so much to gain from their interaction.

Philopolis offers a venue for such a discussion and stresses the importance of finding an accessible, non-technical language in which to have it. In the name of accessibility, the event is absolutely free, requires no registration beforehand, and includes a free lunch and refreshments for everyone in attendance.

The ASTRA Seminar Series presents Prof. Madhur Anand, School of Environmental Sciences. She will discuss "Human-Environment Systems and Sustainability: Collective Intentions vs. the Invisible Hand." Everyone is welcome.

"We all know that humans are part of the so-called 'environment.' But the collapse of human-dominated ecosystems in not so distant and recent times suggests that we don't have a good understanding of human-environment systems.

"What are some of the beliefs and values that humans introduce into their interactions with ecosystems? Can this kind of knowledge help us to move away from 'invisible hand' metaphors of production systems and more towards managing collective intentions towards greater sustainability?

"I will address these questions and give an example of an approach to coupling human-environment systems from our recent work on mathematical modeling of human influence on forest-grassland mosaic dynamics. By 'coupling', I mean a two-way feedback: from human behaviour to 'environmental' dynamics and back to human behaviour."

Migrant Farm Worker Awareness Week runs from March 26 to 30 at the University of Guelph in partnership with the Agriculture Workers Alliance and Students Against Migrant Exploitation. The week's events aim to increase awareness of the men and women who grow and harvest our food.

Coinciding with National Farm Worker Awareness Week in the United States, final year sociology and anthropology students hope to shed light on farm workers’ efforts to secure appropriate living and working conditions, and fair treatment under the law through art, film and discussion.

The week kicks off Monday at 10 a.m. in the University Centre with an Arts Exposé, featuring beat poetry, singer/songwriters and a photo montage by Vincenzo Pietropaolo.

Tuesday is the Canadian premiere of Eva Longoria’s The Harvest, a compelling documentary about farm workers in the United States.

Wednesday celebrates the 10th anniversary of the National Film Board’s El Contrato, including a question and answer session with director Min Sook Lee and prominent migrant rights activists featured in the film.

The week wraps up Thursday with a panel discussion on migrants in the Canadian food system hosted by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Expert panelists from the farming community, the labour movement and the Ontario government will share their views and take questions from the audience.
