Get Swabbed! is an annual coast-to-coast university challenge designed to recruit potential stem cell donors for the One Match Stem Cell and Marrow Registry. More than 7,500 students from 20 universities registered last year – 1,500 of those at the University of Guelph.
According to Canadian Blood Services, more than 900 people are currently waiting for a stem cell match from an unrelated donor. Of more than 330,000 Canadians who have provided a cheek swab for the national registry, 76 per cent are Caucasian and only 24 per cent are from Canada’s many ethnic groups. For this reason, the One Match Get Swabbed! Challenge is making a special appeal to donors from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
