BetterPlanet Project Speaker Series
The BetterPlanet Project Speaker Series presents "Making it a Safer Better Planet for Children." Learn how psychology professor Barbara Morrongiello is helping build a better planet by making the world a safer place for children and teaching them how to avoid hazards that can lead to injury.
Morrongiello and her research team are using technology in innovative ways. Her novel research includes:
• The Blue Dog software program/video game that helps children understand a dog's behaviour and recognize when it's friendly and wants to play or when it wants to be left alone.
• A high-tech virtual reality system that teaches children to cross the street more safely by immersing them in a 3-D environment. The children wear headsets with trackers that modify their perspective.
• An online training program called Safe Sibs that teaches older siblings about effective supervision practices when keeping an eye on younger children at home.
• A classroom-based home safety program that is delivered to children in kindergarten and improves their understanding of safety hazards and behaviours that can lead to serious injuries.
As part of the 2013 BetterPlanet Project Speaker Series, Morrongiello will discuss her research projects, which involve children and parents from the greater Guelph community.
