Position Description:

The College of Management and Economics of the University of Guelph invites applications, nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Chair, Department of Business.

 

The University of Guelph has achieved prominence in Canada and around the world as a research-intensive and learner-centred university. Approximately 16,200 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students attend the University of Guelph to pursue 11 undergraduate and 45 graduate degree programs housed within its seven colleges.  With 800 full-time faculty and approximately 2,000 full-time staff, Guelph’s annual operating budget exceeds $500 million.

 

Created in 2006, the College of Management and Economics (CME) is the newest college at the University of Guelph, providing a high-quality research, learning and social environment that encourages reflection, curiosity and global awareness, and promoting comprehensive understanding of both traditional and emerging themes in management, economics and related areas.  Comprising four academic units – Business, Economics, Marketing and Consumer Studies, and the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management – CME offers a range of well-respected undergraduate and graduate programs in commerce, economics, management and leadership, including an MBA, MA and MSc, a longstanding and highly successful PhD in Economics and a new PhD in Management, as well as a range of co-op options. The Department of Business (www.business.uoguelph.ca) has 16 faculty members and responsibility for two majors in the BComm program, Human Resource Management and Accounting. The Department also offers an undergraduate leadership certificate, a two-year executive MA in Leadership and an Organizational Leadership field in the PhD in Management, and makes a major contribution to the BBA program at the University of Guelph-Humber.  Faculty members teach and conduct research in accounting, financial management, business policy, strategy, human resource management, organizational behaviour, leadership, corporate social responsibility and pedagogy.  The Chair provides the academic and strategic leadership for the Department and fosters an organizational environment that is conducive to excellence.  Accountable to the Dean, the Chair is also responsible for the day to day operation of the Department of Business.

 

Ideal candidates for this position will be dynamic, innovative leaders with an established record of successful teaching and research in one or more areas of interest to the Department. Candidates will possess an open and collegial style; outstanding management, communication and interpersonal skills; a creative approach to problem solving; the ability to mentor and support faculty, staff and students; the capacity to build and sustain positive relationships with all constituents; and a commitment to leading the Department to the next level of accomplishment and in so doing contributing to the goals of the College of Management and Economics.
