Position Description:

The School of Engineering at the University of Guelph began an ambitious expansion program in September 2009.  As a result, faculty positions are required in several areas. The School of Engineering invites applications from outstanding individuals for the following 3 new tenure track positions at the Assistant and Associate Professor levels.

Position 1: Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing Process)
This is an essential position to support the manufacturing systems stream of the mechanical engineering program. The candidate must have potential to develop a strong, externally funded research program in the manufacturing process mechanics and material deformation as applied to metal cutting and metal forming.  Knowledge of material handling equipment design and selection, facility layout, production planning and control, process modeling, monitoring and control is an asset. The ideal candidate must be capable of teaching courses related to manufacturing processes, integrated manufacturing systems, and manufacturing system design in addition to mechanical engineering core courses. The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering, and an earned doctorate in a related field.

Position 2: Mechanical Engineering (Thermofluids/Sustainability)
The School of Engineering is particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in the thermofluids area of mechanical engineering and strengths in the areas that are directly related to its mission towards sustainability and innovation. The candidate must have potential to develop a strong, externally funded research program in: sustainable mechanical design or/and renewable energy (especially solar); energy management in buildings and industry. The ideal candidate must be capable of teaching courses related to thermofluids, energy conversion, energy management and utilization, sustainable energy system design, and interdisciplinary mechanical engineering design. The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, and an earned doctorate in a related field.

Position 3: Computer Engineering (Network and Computer Architecture)
The School of Engineering is seeking to hire a faculty member in computer engineering who has a breadth of expertise in computer architecture, networking and communication systems. The new faculty member should have a bachelor and doctorates degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering. Research and working experience in one or more of the following areas will be an asset: computer networks/communication systems, high performance computing/distributed systems and distributed and wireless sensor networks.

All three candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program funded by external funding sources and provide service to the University and the engineering profession.

All applicants must demonstrate excellent research potential as well as strong undergraduate teaching interest and ability. They will be expected to mentor graduate students. They will provide service within and external to the University. Post-doctoral academic/industrial research experience is desired. Preference will be given to candidates who will combine excellence in teaching with a demonstrated capacity to conduct novel, interdisciplinary research that will expand and complement our current research strengths.

The School has particular strength and emphasis in design and therefore candidates with strengths in design are desirable.  Eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario is a requirement of these positions at the time of hiring.

The University of Guelph has well established and accredited undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Biological Engineering, Engineering Systems and Computing, Environmental Engineering and Water Resources Engineering. In 2009, the School launched a Mechanical Engineering program, and in Fall 2010, Biomedical and Computer Engineering programs were launched. At present the School is comprised of over 37 faculty members, 23 staff and technicians, 1200 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students.

The City of Guelph is known for its educational and cultural life and has often been rated as one of the best cities to live in Canada.
