Position Description:
The University of Guelph invites applications for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in the Departments of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences (HHNS) and Psychology in the area of "Neuroscience in Movement and Exercise". Candidates for this Chair should be mid-career/senior scientists who are internationally recognized and outstanding and innovative researchers who have made, or are beginning to make, a major impact in their field. They should have superior and consistent track records in securing research funds, attracting and supervising excellent graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and have original research programs of the highest quality. The appointment will be tenured at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, with reduced teaching responsibilities. Tier 1 CRC appointments are tenable for seven years and are renewable.
The CRC in “Neuroscience in Movement and Exercise” will be an integrative neurophysiologist with experience working with human and/or animal models. They will use novel approaches to advance the field of exercise neuroscience across the general population, high-level athletics, and/or clinical conditions. This should be achieved with, but not limited to: assessment of central and peripheral nervous system interaction with movement and exercise, fatigue, and sensory-motor integration. Experience with, and use of advanced imaging techniques (e.g., MRI, ultrasound, EEG) would be an asset. The CRC position will complement the strategic plans of both Colleges and the University in the areas of “Health and well-being in humans and animals” and “Technology and applied sciences”. More specifically the sub-themes may include: biomedical technology, neurosciences, human development and aging, and modelling of biological systems and human health.
The successful candidate would have the opportunity to interact with faculty who are actively engaged in a wide variety of animal and/or human-based biomechanics and neuromobility research (HHNS and Psychology). There are unique opportunities for collaborative research afforded within the departments of HHNS and Psychology, as the Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences has an in house animal facility and there are also opportunities to be involved in large animal and equine research on campus. The Department of HHNS is noted for research in understanding sensory motor integration and biomechanical/musculoskeletal interaction across populations and clinical conditions and has world class faculty working with both human and animal models to unravel the mechanisms of mobility in acute and chronic adapted states. The faculty in the Department of Psychology have expertise in human cognitive neuroscience and rodent behavioural neuroscience, including a faculty member holding a Tier I CRC position in Behavioural Neuroscience. The University of Guelph is uniquely placed to assume a leadership role as pioneers in the field of exercise neuroscience. At Guelph, Neuroscience is an area of emphasis and growth, which is highlighted by a number of key programs. Guelph has a collaborative MSc/PhD program specialization in Neuroscience that involves four colleges and this includes the participation of HHNS and the Applied Cognitive Science group in the Psychology Department. We have also approved a new undergraduate major in Neuroscience.
