Position Description:

The University of Guelph’s College of Physical & Engineering Science uniquely combines Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Math & Statistics and Physics to enable innovative and collaborative teaching, learning and research focused on solving the world’s big problems through teamwork and interdisciplinary scholarship. With a current enrolment of some 3,100 undergraduate and 370 graduate students, one of the highest percentages of female STEM students nationally, five Canada Research Chairs, annual research funding of more than $17 million and a range of innovative programs and leading research foci, the College of Physical & Engineering Science is positioned to be a significant part of the University of Guelph’s Path Forward.

The College of Physical & Engineering Science is seeking an experienced academic leader committed to interdisciplinarity, collaboration and innovation to become its new Dean. Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), the Dean of the College of Physical & Engineering Science will provide academic and administrative leadership and be an integral member of the academic leadership team at the University. Working collegially with the College’s two Associate Deans, two Directors, three Chairs, 125 full-time faculty and staff, the Dean will develop, articulate and communicate a shared strategic vision that recognizes the unique strengths of each of the College’s five disciplines. The Dean will enhance collaboration across disciplines to distinguish the College nationally and internationally and support the University’s objectives of inspiring learning and inquiry, stewarding valued resources, connecting communities, catalyzing discovery and change and nurturing a distinctive University culture. The Dean will seek out opportunities to further engage with other academic institutions, businesses, industry associations, government agencies and community partners, fostering a synergistic relationship between the College, its students and its stakeholders. The Dean will encourage and support the development of the College’s research, teaching and academic programs, while promoting excellence, teamwork and student centered learning and success.

As the ideal candidate, you hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and your academic accomplishment is consistent with appointment to the rank of Professor. You have demonstrated both excellence in research and success in teaching and have academic administrative leadership experience, ideally in a unionized context. A Professional Engineering designation would be considered an asset. You are a strategic and forward thinker conversant in the evolution of research, teaching and learning within the field of engineering and physical science, and are able to lead with vision in a rapidly changing environment. You bring experience in program development, strategic planning, fundraising and in developing partnerships within and outside your institution. You have exceptional relationship building and communication skills, value diversity of ideas and backgrounds, are collegial and collaborative in your dealings with others and are interested in mentoring and enabling the scholarship and research of your colleagues.
