Position Description:

The Opportunity:
The Department of Animal Biosciences is seeking candidates for a full-time, tenure-track (12 months per year) faculty position in Animal Physiology at either the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The position will initially be funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) project Food from Thought, Agricultural Systems for a Healthy Planet. The goal of this project is to strengthen multi-disciplinary research focused on enhancing economic, environmental and social well being as well as the global competitiveness of our agri-food system.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the discipline of Animal Physiology. The areas of interest and expertise of the candidate may include, but are not limited to, metabolism, endocrinology, nutritional biochemistry, development, lactation, reproduction, and stress physiology. Expertise in classical research methods in physiology and the ability to use modern biotechnologies such as sensorics and omics platforms are valuable assets. Expertise of the candidate must be supported by an excellent scientific publication record and achievements in teaching and scholarly activities.

The successful candidate is expected to secure extramural research funding and lead an innovative and collaborative research program aimed at applying her/his expertise in physiology to improve animal health and welfare, efficiency and sustainability of food animal production, and/or the use of animals as models of human health and disease. This position has been created as part of a mission to devise precision livestock management systems based on monitoring individual animal traits in real time. The successful candidate will be provided access to state-of-the art animal housing and laboratory facilities and opportunities for collaboration with leading scientists in related disciplines, including physiology, nutrition, behaviour, genetics and health management, as well as industry partners. This position will contribute to teaching physiological courses, for example, environmental physiology metabolic physiology or neurophysiology (including entero-neuro) in the undergraduate and graduate student programs, as well as advising and supervision of highly qualified graduate students and post-graduate scientists.

Animal Biosciences is a research-intensive department with successful programs for graduate and undergraduate students. The disciplines include: nutrition, physiology, behaviour and welfare, breeding and genetics, growth and development, and meat science. As part of the Ontario Agricultural College, the Department of Animal Biosciences has a long history of achievements in serving the agriculture and agri-food industries within Ontario and beyond.
