Position Description:

The Animal Health Laboratory, located in Kemptville, Ontario (AHL-Kv), provides diagnostic services for veterinarians in eastern Ontario specifically related to naturally occurring disease (morbidity, mortality and production loss) in domestic animals, including livestock, poultry, and companion animals. Diagnoses are reached through consultation with veterinarians and owners, and examination and interpretation of lesions via autopsy and/or histopathology. Disease information is used to track disease trends, for surveillance of the health of Ontario livestock, and in turn, to improve the competitiveness of the Ontario animal industries.

With an employee complement at AHL-Kv of 2 pathologists and 1.5 technicians, the Veterinary Pathologist/ Laboratory Head acts as laboratory manager and case co-ordinator. In addition to ordering, correlating and interpreting additional tests from other areas of the diagnostic laboratory system, this position is responsible for day-to-day laboratory operations and is the direct supervisor of the technical staff. This position also provides consultative services to practising veterinarians on complex disease problems, and is responsible for recognition and notification of reportable and notifiable animal diseases. The incumbent will provide expertise in the specialty area of veterinary pathology and will transfer knowledge to the profession and animal industries through publications and presentations. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the Collective Agreement between the University and the University of Guelph Faculty Association (UGFA).

Requirements of the position include: DVM or equivalent degree; CVO license to practice veterinary medicine in Ontario; advanced training in anatomic pathology (Diploma, MSc, DVSc, or PhD); ACVP (Anatomic Pathology) board certification; proficiency in conducting diagnostic tests and identifying diseases, assessing results and interpreting findings; sound knowledge of zoonoses and reportable/notifiable diseases; excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills to convey scientific knowledge to a variety of colleagues and public audiences; organizational experience to plan work schedules, establish priorities; experience with, and enthusiasm for, providing excellent client service as part of a client-focussed team; demonstrated supervisory experience to manage day-to-day laboratory operations and undertake all aspects of a supervisory role; ability to interpret and apply provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act within a laboratory environment. Bilingual proficiency (English/French) is an asset. Must be rabies immunized.
