Position Description:

As part of the OMAFRA-UofG Agreement, the AHL is funded to enhance animal disease surveillance within Ontario. The successful Ontario Animal Health Network (OAHN) Coordinator candidate will coordinate 10 species-specific networks of veterinarians, including coordinating the collection, monitoring, and analyses of clinical and laboratory data sufficient to detect important changes in health, validate animal health and product safety in context, and distribute information of value for use in timely health management decisions. This position also assists in improving and optimizing quality, efficiency, and representativeness of submissions and accompanying data to the Animal Health Laboratory, and interpretation and application of test results for clients. Utilizing expertise in diagnostic veterinary laboratory medicine, the incumbent facilitates the optimal selection and submission of specimens, and consults with practitioners about interpretation of results and their needs for additional testing. This position has oversight of the OAHN budget and manages one employee.

Requirements of the position include: DVM or equivalent; license to practice veterinary medicine in Ontario; at least 2 years of large/mixed animal practice; proficiency in understanding laboratory tests, assessing results, interpreting findings, and identifying pathogens and diseases; sound knowledge of zoonoses and reportable/notifiable diseases; strong commitment to client satisfaction; excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication and presentation skills to interact with a variety of clients and collaborators; advanced organizational skills; budget oversight experience; supervisory skills; experience with social media/multimedia; standard microcomputer skills; ability to interpret and apply provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act within a laboratory environment; valid driver’s license. Must be rabies immunized. Hours of the position are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with flexibility required to attend evening and weekend meetings. Travel is required. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the Collective Agreement between the University and the University of Guelph Faculty Association (UGFA).
