Position Description:

Applicants are sought for the position of Director, School of Languages and Literatures, in the College of Arts at the University of Guelph.

Applicants will be at Senior Associate or Full Professor rank and hold a PhD in a Modern Language discipline relevant to the School’s language areas, or in Classical Studies. Fluency in one or more of the languages taught in the School is essential. Candidates will have strong academic qualifications in teaching and scholarship, relevant experience in university administration, the ability to work well in a collegial and consultative atmosphere, as well as a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research. The Director will work closely with the College Dean and other Chairs/Directors for the benefit of the School and of the College. The Director will maintain effective communication between the School and the College, and between him/herself and the members of the School. The Director will also provide the high level of leadership and energy necessary to realize the goals of the School.

The Director will be responsible for guiding the School’s growth, managing its affairs in accordance with the strategic plans of the College and the University, and articulating the School’s academic vision particularly in relation to the University’s commitment to internationalism. The mandate is for a five-year period starting June 30, 2019. Responsibilities and conditions around the position of Director are outlined in Article 20 of the Collective Agreement.
