Position Description:

The Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Food Science. Food Science is a research-intensive department that is ranked as the best of its kind in Canada and in the top 5 for Food Science and Technology Departments world-wide. It is a comprehensive Food Science Department, including key areas such as food safety, cereal chemistry, meat science, fat and oil science, sensory science, dairy science, food engineering, materials development, packaging, applied microbiology, and physics. The Department offers undergraduate majors in multiple degree programs including Food Science and Food Industry Management. In addition, Food Science has very strong graduate programs, including a comprehensive PhD program, thesis-based Masters programs, and a course-based Masters in Food Safety and Quality Assurance. The Department also offers industry targeted courses including the Loblaw Academy, a cheese course and North America’s longest-running Ice Cream course. The Department is also home to the Guelph Food Innovation Centre which includes three fully renovated pilot plants that allow faculty and students to work on development projects with industry clients on site. As part of OAC, Food Science has a very long history of achievements in serving the agriculture food industry within Ontario and beyond. The Chair is responsible for the orderly, effective, efficient and collegial operation of the Department. He/she provides leadership for initiatives identified by the faculty members and supports individuals in the fulfillment of their assigned responsibilities. The Chair, through consultation with members of the Department, is responsible for enhancing academic programs, increasing contributions to knowledge, strengthening relationships with industry and other potential partners and promoting the Department to the public. The appointment will be for a five-year term, with a possibility of renewal for another five years.

The preferred candidate will be a successful educator and leader holding a tenured faculty appointment at the University of Guelph, with an exemplary record of research and scholarly accomplishments. The Chair will be required to offer vision and leadership, demonstrate innovating thinking and exhibit strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Experience in human and financial resource management and the ability to engage faculty, staff and students in developing and executing new initiatives are required. The Chair will have a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with industry, government agencies and alumni, including the development of funding and support for scholarly programs. The successful candidate will also have the ability to network, communicate and facilitate the advancement of Food Science, OAC and the University.
