Position Description:

The Ontario Veterinary College invites applications from within the University for the position of Associate Dean, Research & Graduate Programs (ADR). This is a term-limited position of 5 years in the first instance, and renewable for one further 5-year term. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2019.

The ADR is a key advisor to the Dean, a prominent member of the college's senior leadership, and a representative of the College within the broader university and externally. The ADR will work closely with the Dean, the other Associate Deans, and the Department Chairs in advancing the research and graduate training priorities of the College and University. The ADR provides strategic leadership to support the College's capacity to conduct excellent research that meets the academic goals of students and faculty. In addition, the ADR provides leadership for OVC’s graduate programs, research centres, and research governance.

The successful candidate will be a tenured associate or full professor within the University, will have demonstrated success in research, attracting funding from a variety of sources, and show strong collaborative abilities. The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in research and graduate training in fields reflecting the mission of the College. The ADR will provide leadership and will work for the success of the College using an effective and consultative management style, while upholding the College’s high standards for excellence. They will have a record of effective involvement in service and decision-making within the University, and be able to demonstrate leadership in successful collaborative ventures.

Knowledge required to perform duties:

  • Advanced knowledge of the research, innovation, and graduate training priorities, programs, regulations, and administrative procedures at OVC and the University of Guelph.
  • Advanced knowledge of the major funding sources to support research and graduate training (e.g., internal, private sector, provincial, federal, international) and factors impacting funding success, including grant writing and mentorship for new and established researchers.
  • Familiarity with generating and overseeing contracts and agreements with public and private sector partners, lead large inter-institutional initiatives, conduct knowledge transfer and translation (KTT) activities.
  • Knowledge of measures of performance and impact of research, graduate training and KTT activities.
  • Familiarity with best practices in the supervision, training and mentorship of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

    While the position is open to any tenured faculty member in the University, an applicant from outside the College who is successful in the application process, will have to secure from their college Dean and the Provost, budgetary release of their position to be transferred to OVC.
