College: Ontario Agricultural College

Department: Department of Animal Biosciences

Date Posted: April 22, 2019

Deadline: July 31, 2019
Please reference AD #19-34

Position Description:

The Department of Animal Biosciences at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

Aquatic animal and plant production by the aquaculture sector has now exceeded the volume and economic value of the global, wild harvest seafood industry. The University of Guelph has a rich history and a longstanding reputation for its many contributions to the aquaculture field, most notably in the areas of fish physiology, production technologies, reproduction, nutrition, health and disease management, genetics, new species development, animal welfare, and policy and regulatory science.

The University of Guelph also operates a world class research centre and quarantine facility in the Alma Aquaculture Research Station, and has additional on-campus research facilities. Importantly, we also have a long-standing institutional obligation to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to support the provincial and national aquatic farming sectors through research, education and outreach. Aquaculture development in Ontario is currently a key area of emphasis for the province and university, as it represents a significant growth opportunity for both rural and indigenous communities in the province. Accordingly, the successful candidate is expected to play a continuing role in helping the province realize the potential for growth in this sector.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. with post-doctoral experience, and have a strong academic background in one or more of the following research disciplines including:

  • fish physiology/endocrinology, with a particular emphasis on the interactions between environment and physiological responses of captive fishes;
  • environmental impact assessment, including modelling and monitoring technologies to help predict and mitigate the ecosystem effects of aquaculture;
  • genetics, especially in the area of molecular genetics and breeding practices which optimize such traits as growth, environmental tolerance, disease resistance and reproductive efficiencies;
  • nutritional sciences, specifically precision formulation and modelling, and alternative ingredients that promote long-term sustainability of feeds, or,
  • animal welfare, including production, slaughter, breeding and feeding technology effects.
  • As well, the candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to collaborating with the private sector aquaculture industry, particularly in Ontario and Canada. Strong skills in research planning, financial management, capital project development, and public communication are essential.

    The successful candidate is expected to have a strong and active research track record, evident by high-quality, peer-reviewed publications. The candidate should show potential for pursuing research funding, both individually and collaboratively and to engage in research that complements, and collaborates with, other faculty members in the department, college, and across the University. The individual will also be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate students.

    The Department of Animal Biosciences (ABSC) is a research-intensive department with successful programs for graduate and undergraduate students. The disciplines in ABSC include: nutrition, physiology, behaviour and welfare, breeding, genetics and genomics, growth and development, and meat science. As part of the Ontario Agricultural College, ABSC has a long history of achievements in serving the agriculture and agri-food industries within Ontario and beyond.
