Position Description:

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Guelph Institute of Development Studies at the University of Guelph invite applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Anthropology, International Development Studies, or Sociology, and will ideally hold a research agenda that explores the intersections of two or more of the following in a development context: community, environment, food, wellbeing, livelihoods. Geographical area of expertise is open, and the successful candidate will have extensive, community-based fieldwork experience. The preferred candidate will also have strong language proficiency in English and at least one other language related to their research agenda. Firsthand experience working with community and/or international development agencies is also an asset.

With a distribution of effort of 60% Teaching, 20% Research, and 20% Service, the successful candidate will be cross-appointed to the Sociology and Anthropology Department and the Guelph Institute of Development Studies, and will demonstrate strengths in innovative teaching pedagogies. The successful candidate will teach three courses from each of the following lists:

1. ANTH*2660: Contemporary Indigenous Peoples in Canada; SOAN*2290: Identities and Cultural Diversity; SOAN*3250: Social Change in Latin America; SOAN*3680: Perspectives on Development; SOAN 4250: Energy and Society; SOAN*4320: Transition from School to Work; SOC 4420: Sociology of Food
2. IDEV*2000 The Development Landscape: Actors and Institutions; IDEV*2100: Research in International Development; IDEV*2300: Theoretical Perspectives on Development; IDEV*3100 Achieving Sustainable Development; IDEV*3300: Engaging in Development Practice; IDEV*4000 Development in Action and IDEV*4600 Advocating and Effecting Change in Development Policy and Practice

Anticipated start date for this position is January 2021.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers undergraduate degrees in Anthropology and Sociology, and graduate degrees in Anthropology (MA) and Sociology (MA, PhD). We offer, in collaboration with Political Science, to a BA in Criminal Justice and Public Policy, and an MA in Criminology and Criminal Justice Policy. We are contributors to programs at the Guelph Institute of Development Studies. The Guelph Institute of Development Studies (GIDS) offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Development Studies, collaborating with a wide range of departments and institutes on campus, including the social sciences, history, languages, agriculture, engineering and the natural sciences. The College of Social and Applied Human Sciences is a national and international leader in promoting community engagement in research, teaching and learning. The Department and the College support and welcome community engaged scholarship activities.
