Position Description:

The McLaughlin Library invites applications for a dynamic, creative, collaborative and solution-oriented librarian to fill the position of head, Learning & Curriculum Support. This senior leadership position reports to the Associate University Librarian, Academic, and is a member of the library’s management team. This position provides strategic leadership and oversight for the staff and operations of the L&CS team, which provides expertise, services, and resources to advance the university’s teaching and learning objectives. In particular the team supports student learning, retention and success by delivering a range of curricular and co-curricular services to address academic literacies and professional skills.

The incumbent will promote the vision of the library as being central to the University community as a valued facilitator, partner, and catalyst on campus. At the McLaughlin Library, we have recently implemented a new management framework to provide clarity around the expectations of library managers and to develop a shared understanding of library management practices.

Applicants should be aware that the portfolio is expected to change to meet the evolving needs of the organization, specifically in response to the reports from the Learning Commons Refresh and Organizational Structure Review Committees in W2020.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

  • Provide leadership, expertise and guidance to support the L&CS team of approximately 22 Full Time Equivalent employees, including Librarians, professionals, support staff, students and Peer Helpers.
  • Initiate, develop, and maintain strategic, collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders both within and outside of the University (e.g. Curriculum Committees; Office of Teaching & Learning; OpenEd; AVPA; AVPGS). Lead the L&CS team to develop and prioritize these opportunities.
  • Develop and adapt strategies to deliver effective, efficient core services to meet the evolving needs of the University of Guelph academic community.
  • Develop and implement operational procedures and policies to guide decision-making and practice in all areas related to the team.
  • Lead the team in establishing, managing and disseminating metrics that represent the impact of L&CS core activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other teams in supporting digital scholarship.
  • As a member of the Library Management Team (LMT), participate in the collaborative management of the library, including strategic planning, administrative coordination that includes policy development, alignment of services and programs with strategic objectives, assessment, and organizational culture and development.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An ALA accredited MLIS or equivalent degree
  • Minimum of seven years of experience as a professional librarian in an academic setting, with increasing levels of responsibility (e.g. managing staff, projects, resources, budget)
  • Experience envisioning, establishing, adapting, and implementing curriculum support strategies and programs
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing curriculum/co-curricular initiatives or projects
  • Experience supervising and mentoring a diverse group of staff and developing a collaborative and supportive team culture
  • Demonstrated user-centered service philosophy and client focus, with exceptional ability to build partnerships with colleagues, users and partners on campus and beyond
  • Exceptional leadership skills with a demonstrated commitment to collaboration and the ability to articulate priorities and values across a diverse constituency
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication
  • Evidence of participation in professional activities and a well-established record of scholarship

    The position is a Continuing Appointment-track or Continuing Appointment position that will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Librarian level. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and a comprehensive benefits package is provided. The Head, Learning & Curriculum Support role is a five-year administrative appointment (renewable once) with a stipend at the Administrative Librarian III level.
