Position Description:

The Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph is seeking applications from regular full-time UGFA 1 and UGFA 2 members for the position of Assistant Dean (Academic), Ridgetown Campus.

Accountable to the Dean under the supervision of the OAC Associate Dean (Academic) and working closely with the OAC Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies), the Assistant Dean (Academic), Ridgetown Campus will provide effective leadership and direction in the development and delivery of academic programs. Based at the Ridgetown campus the assistant Dean will be a member of the Ridgetown Campus and OAC Senior Team and various campus committees, the incumbent will participate in and contribute to the advancement of the campus vision, development of the strategic plan, and participate in decision-making processes. Specifically, the incumbent will provide academic leadership in the following ways:

  • Ensure the quality and relevance of academic offerings through the development, coordination, and implementation of sound academic programs, policies, and procedures;
  • Set clear objectives for enhancing campus curriculum review, development, and delivery processes, instructional methods, and academic standards;
  • Actively develop and foster student success strategies;
  • Maintain a high level of academic performance through effective recruiting, developing, and motivating instructional staff, including managing sessional and temporary academic hiring;
  • Foster a strong academic team approach among program coordinators and academic staff;
  • In consultation with program coordinators, plan and implement instructor workload assignments;
  • Develop and manage academic unit budgets;
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and management for the academic enterprise at the Ridgetown campus and work collaboratively with functional areas, such as Registrarial Services and HR, to succeed in operational activities such as scheduling, work assignments, and course outline approvals;
  • Chair or co-chair a number of committees, including the Associate Diploma Program Committee, Curriculum Committee (including managing Curriculum Committee appointments), Campus Programs Academic Review Committee, Campus Admissions and Academic Policy Committee, and Student Academic Review Committee;
  • Be a key member of other campus committees and groups, including the Campus Management Advisory (or Executive) Committee, and Campus Liaison, Admissions, and Operational Committees;
  • Be a member of the OAC Dean’s Council;
  • Supervise program counseling, including personnel management;
  • Conduct teaching evaluations and evaluations for UGFA2 and other non-UGFA1 instructors at the campus;
  • Conduct and manage campus program quality assurance reviews;
  • Manage academic misconducts for the campus;
  • Provide oversight of admissions policies and practices in coordination with the Assistant Registrar (Ridgetown campus) and the Registrar of the University of Guelph;
  • Provide oversight of scheduling in cooperation with the Assistant Registrar, Ridgetown campus;
  • Provide leadership in the student complaint process and resolution;
  • Participate in the UGFA2 collective bargaining process;
  • Provide coordination and leadership of program coordinators, including appointments and role definition

Assistant Dean (Academic), Ridgetown Campus will be a member of the excluded faculty group for the full term of their appointment. This shall normally be five (5) years.
