Position Description:

Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Chair in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (SOAN). The appointment as Chair will be for five years, effective July 1, 2020, with the possibility of being renewed for a second term of up to five years.

Candidates must be tenured faculty members at the University of Guelph* and should have a substantial understanding of the SOAN department and the disciplinary sub-fields or ‘areas’ that comprise its teaching and research programs. The successful candidate will possess leadership and management capabilities that serve the needs of the department, college and university, as well as the ability to appreciate and provide balanced leadership across scholarly areas and stakeholder groups. A strong record of teaching, scholarship and service is also required. A record of successful service at college and university levels would be an asset.

In collaboration with departmental colleagues, the Chair will be expected to guide the future direction and positioning of the department, in alignment with College and University strategic directions. The Chair has overall responsibility that Department, College and University policies and processes are formulated and followed and that resources are properly allocated. The Chair will be expected to maintain and communicate a sense of direction; support individual members of the department through mentoring and facilitation; encourage collegiality among students, staff and faculty; demonstrate and foster respect for a range of career paths and different forms and fields of scholarship; foster values of fairness, excellence and collaboration; act as an effective and responsible advocate for the department; and maintain a sense of pride, achievement and community among all members (students, staff and faculty) of the department.

*Note that appointment of an applicant from a department other than SOAN would be subject to provisions in Article 24.1 of the collective agreement, consideration of operational and budgetary considerations, and consent by the respective Dean(s) and Provost.
