Position Description:

The College of Arts at the University of Guelph invites internal applications for the Director position, School of Languages and Literatures at the Associate or Full Professor level.

Applicants will be at Associate or Full Professor rank and hold a PhD in a Modern Language discipline relevant to the School’s language areas, or in Classical Studies. Fluency in one or more of the languages taught in the School is essential. The mandate is for a five-year term starting July 1, 2022. Responsibilities and conditions around the position of Director are outlined in Article 20 of the Collective Agreement.

The School Languages and Literatures is home to 18 faculty members who teach and research in diverse cultures and languages from around the world. With approximately 4,000 student course enrolments each year, the school has comprehensive and high-quality program offerings that include: Bachelor of Arts (BA) programs in Classical Studies, European Studies, French Studies, German Studies, Spanish and Hispanic Studies, Italian Studies and Master of Arts (MA) programs in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, European Studies, French Studies, and Crossways in Cultural Narratives.

The applicant must have strong academic qualifications in teaching and scholarship, relevant experience in university administration, the ability to work well in a collegial and consultative atmosphere, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research. The Director will work closely with the College Dean, the Associate Deans, the Director of Interdisciplinary Programs, and other Chairs/Directors for the benefit of the School and of the College. It will be essential for the Director to maintain effective communication between the School and the College. The Director will work to encourage the School’s growth, manage its affairs in accordance with the overall strategic plans of the College and the University, and articulate the School’s academic vision to the University community and beyond. The Director will take on a key role in managing staff in the School and work with the Senior Development of the College on alumni and development. More generally, the Director will also provide the high level of leadership and energy necessary to facilitate personal and institutional goals in the years ahead.
