Introduction
The MSc program in Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) is designed to produce sophisticated scholars and therapists by integrating contemporary theory, research knowledge, and systemic approaches to therapy in understanding and treating families today. Masters graduates specializing in CFT are highly regarded and much in demand in Canada. Graduates are employed within social service agencies, hospitals, and mental health centres; some teach in community colleges and universities, and some work in private practice.
The MSc program in CFT prepares its graduates to become mental health professionals with specialized knowledge and skills in couple and family therapy. The MSc program in CFT is taught by the inter-disciplinary faculty of the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition and is part of the Family Relations and Human Development (FRHD) field of study.
Couple and Family Therapy students take clinically related courses focused on children and youth, parent-child relationships, sexuality, and health and well-being from specialists in these areas who are family therapists with academic training in psychology, sociology, family relations, or social work. We teach and practice strength-based perspectives that respect the diverse experiences and communities of both students and clients.
The intensive program in theory, research and practice is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).
Graduates of our program have full access to membership in the Canadian Division of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and the various regional branches of that division, including the Ontario Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (OAMFT).
