Components of the Qualifying Examination
The qualifying examination has four components:
- A written evaluation prepared by the Advisory Committee of the quality of the student's performance to date in research, and of the student's potential as a researcher.
- A description of the scope of the qualifying examination consisting of a description of the scholarly field and research area as well as a reading list. This document is prepared by the student in consultation with the Advisory Committee. Upon approval of this document by the Advisory Committee, it is submitted with the student's request for the qualifying examination.
- A written examination completed by the student, based on questions prepared by the Examining Committee.
- Oral examination of the student by the Examining Committee.
