Research Objectives and Approach
In order to achieve an accurate visual representation of shipping movements across the North Atlantic Ocean in the early to mid-nineteenth century, a list of five core objectives was established. The following section provides an outline and brief justification of the approach implemented to accomplish these objectives.
Research Objective 1: Identify factors that influence timber shipping movements across the Atlantic Ocean from 1805-1840 through a literature review on navigating sailing vessels
Reseach Objective 2: Develop a GIS-based flow constraint shipping route model using a MCE model based on the factors identified in Objective 1
Research Objective 3: Apply the model to origin/destination data from Lloyd’s Registry by inputting location coordinates in ArcGIS
Research Objective 4: Evaluate strengths/limitations of the MCE model post-implementation
Research Objective 5: Create a series of interactive visual representations of historic shipping routes based on the GIS outputs
