Asteroid Belt

Region of the solar system where the greatest concentration of asteroids are found, located between Mars and Jupiter. Some Astonomers believe that the belt formed from rock fragments that never managed to accumulate into a genuine planet. It is thought that Jupiter's strong magnetic field continuously disturbs the motions of a these fragments, nudging them and pulling them apart and prohibiting them from aggregating into a planet. Despite the high number of asteroids, the belt itself is mostly empty. These objects do not cross paths with the orbit of the Earth, and therefore scientists are not concerned about these asteroids hitting the Earth.
