Aswan Dam

Dam built on the Nile River near the city of Aswan in Egypt. It was intended to provide better water management so that flooding would be controlled, and drought could be better handled. It has caused many soil fertility problems because the floodwaters contained high amounts of nutrient-rich silts. This silt now simply sits behind the dam, and farmers must rely on chemical fertilizers for nutrients. This lack of sediment downstream also results in high amounts of erosion and land subsidence. The top photograph shows the dam from just above, and the bottom photograph shows a satellite image. Lake Nasser is highlighted by a box to show the general location of the dam.
