U.C. Renovation Update

University Centre Administration

University Centre Board

As you may or may not have heard we will be renovating the 1st floor southwest corner of the University Centre.  This renovated space will have a new student space area along with new washrooms.  Floor plans and a 3D rendering will be made public very soon.  Like any major renovation it comes with it's challenges that can affect the occupants of the building.  This communication, along with all future communications, is intended to warn you in advance of any noisy or disruptive work.  For utility shutdowns such as power will continue to use the existing shutdown procedures used on all projects.  Yen Nguyen, construction coordinator, and I are here to work with you as needed to limit all challenges for the occupants of the building.

Construction is expected to start in the next few weeks and be complete before the start of the fall semester.  The most disruptive part of the work is the demolition which will be completed within the first few months of the schedule.  We have asked the contractor to complete the most noisy part of the demolition before 8:30am or after 4:30pm.  We'll also work with the contractor to avoid all excessively noisy work during the April exam period.  This will minimize the disruption to most of the building.  For those that work earlier or later and there are days that noise will be an issue, then please contact me directly and we'll work with you the best we can.  Like any construction activity there will be noise at all times but it is expected to be minimal.  If at anytime there are concerns then please contact Yen or I and we will deal with it as quickly as we can.

This work will also affect the rooms in the basement under this area, from the mail room to the old print shop.  For those of you using those spaces, I will be contacting you directly in the next week to coordinate these activities to limit the disruption to your operation.  If you don't hear from me by then feel free to contact me yourself, just in case I missed someone.

Peter Clark Hall will also get a minor upgrade.  We'll be losing UC103 so we will be updating PCH to make all three areas usable for all meeting types.  This work will take place in June and July.

The main floor washrooms will remain usable until the new ones are almost ready for use.  There will be a short period where we need to re-direct services such as water from the old to the new where these washrooms will be closed.  We will communicate this well in advance and provide plenty of signs to alternate washroom locations.  Our intention is to complete this after the end of the winter semester to the building when occupancy is much lower.

As the project progresses it is my intention to communicate with all of you at least twice a month.  At anytime you can contact Yen or I with any concerns.  Yen can be contacted at extension 53007 or at ynguyen@uoguelph.ca.  My contact info is below.

Regards,
