The
School
of Hotel and Food Administration usually
has funds to provide modest support for some, but not all, full-time graduate
students. The School is usually not able to support part-time graduate
students financially. Applicants are advised to seek financial support
from any or all avenues available to them. Students who are interested
in applying should make themselves familiar with the awards available,
the eligibility criteria, and the due dates for submission of applications.
Financial assistance for graduate students is available in several forms. The major ones include
Master's students are considered for funding for up to two years. Any student who has exceeded the time restrictions for his or her program is not generally eligible for most forms of funding.
A full Graduate Assistantship provides a payment of about $3600 for paid work of 10 hours each week for 14 weeks (a working semester). The purpose of a GTA is to provide assistance to an instructor for a specific course; hence the precise nature of the assistance required, together with the academic background, experience and interests of graduate students is the primary consideration in awarding them.
Undergraduate student enrolment is the major determinant in the allocation of GTAs to instructors, and is decided on by the Director of the School in consultation with the Graduate Coordinator. Because of the nature of the allocation process, GTA awards are generally made about one month before the commencement of the semester (when pre-registration data are available), and are usually available in both the Fall and Winter semesters. It is unusual for GTAs to be awarded for the Spring or Summer sessions. Students awarded GTAs are informed as soon as the allocation decision is made.
All full-time graduate students
may be considered for GTA awards each semester. Part-time graduate students
are not eligible. Students enrolled for longer than four semesters will
generally not be considered for GTA awards.
There is over $50,000 available from a variety of external and internal sources. Students are strongly encouraged to apply for these awards and will be assisted in doing so.
